Walleye Plastics

I have been getting into the "plastics revolution" for panfish and perch. I have used plastics for walleyes pretty extensivley during the softwater season. I am wondering if you more-avid plastic users have favorite plastic(s) you like to use for walleyes on the hardwater, I only ever really hear about them used for perch/panfish.

I've caught tons of eyes...well maybe not tons... on plastics and gulp baits through the ice.

For me 2-3" power or gulp minnows on a 1/16-1/8 oz jig head has been a very effective combo. I've also had good result with gulp minnow heads on a jigging spoon.

I actually like a shad style bait from Apex. It is a two inch black and pearl, more flexible with better movement than the gulps and powerbaits....and its dirt cheap. Downside is that there is not any scent, and the fish have to be more aggressive. Equally important is the jig head! For jigs really like the new Lindy slick jig for movement and the Lindy xchange system, as it allows for a smaller head and a bigger hook setup.. The smaller head, in my opinion, helps the action, while the larger gap hook gives you better hook sets if your going to use some of the bigger 3 inch plastics. I know this might sound goofy, but fill your tub up and start playing with some of this stuff......see what happens with soft jerks versus harder ones....learn how to swim them from side to side....how to root the bottom....how to act wounded. While theses plastic presentations can be effective, they are only as good as the manner in which they are jigged.

Used the Gulp minnow heads last season to tip my spoons and realy liked them, caught almost as many fish with them as with real heads. When the walleyes are real negative and want something smaller, I go for the Gulp Fish Fry with a 1/64th or a 1/80th oz head, like the ones used for panfish.

Thank you for all the Responses guys, I appreciate it!

Charlie, What is the brand name for the Little Atom Nuggies, Jumbo Nuggies, and Jumbo Wedgees? Those sound like what I'm after, they sound crazy enough to actually work! smirk

I have been curious about the Gulp Minnow Heads also, so its good to hear about guys having success with them. I will definately have them in my Arsenal this year.

WOW! The folks at Your Bobber's Down/Little Atom have to be the last place on Earth you can actually get a great product for a reasonable price. I was very impressed with their price points as I just had to try them out for my self and ordered some 'Ice Walleye' plastics. I made a modest purchase this time, but I am sure I will be back for more before the season gets started.

Thanks boys, for turning me onto them.
