Cutting Shooting Lanes

Recommended Posts

I have a favorite funnel I love to hunt but it has gotten brushy over the years. I cleaned out some shooting lanes today, any harm in that? I figure if I do them now, I should be good by next season. Any thoughts?

If its on public land, you are breaking the law. That said, I see no harm in it. It makes a clean kill more likely and helps you identify exactly what you are shooting at, not just a deer. Personally I like to create a path of least resistance leading by my stand. Some spots need a little brush trimming! I also like to clean up my trail so I can quietly get to my stand. All done legally on my own land... Of course. ?

Deer may be using that funnel because it's so dense and brushy.  Be careful how much you cut.  The big boys know when they are being pursued. A few less trees and thinned out brush may force them to find a route around you.

The great thing about this funnel is it is the best way to get from point A to point B under cover. This funnel has always been a better any deer stand then big bucks. I did take a big 11 out of it in the past. I also bumped a nice buck out of it going into a mid day sit, pre rifle season. This past season I harvested a nice doe out of it but really had to search for an opening to shoot. I feel better about opening up some shooting lanes. Thanks for the input everyone!
