Meat slicer are they worth it?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone just wondering what people think about the $100-200 meat slicers? I don't know if i would use it too much so it don't need to be commercial grade. Just would like to slice some corned beef and smoked bacon once in a while. Another question would be i see you can buy different size cutter blades but can you slice bacon on most of these.

I have a $100 Nesco that I bought 10 yrs ago.... I am totally suprised at the amount of meat that I have cut w/ it and have not had and issues. Just this year I have sliced over 30 cooked pork loins with it. It has sliced a lot of partially frozen venny rumps for jerky as well. I am surprised how well the plastic gears have held up. There is a little wear "button" that rides on the back of the blade to maintain clearance that is starting to wear pretty badly. I find that some cooking spray on the back side of the blade resolves the issue

I own a Chefs Choice slicer and it has been a good unit. Not sure which model but it is fairly easy to clean and will slice up to 1" i believe. I'm guessing the 610 model. I've sliced ham , bread, potatoes, cooked pork loins, pork belly bacon, and a couple of other items and it seems to handle the task pretty well.  Probably not the same as an industrial slicer but good enough for the hobby user.
