My 1st time tip up fishing

This was me and my friends first time out tip up fishing. Caught this nice gator,not a trophy but was a real nice size. His biggest pike ever. Lots of fun! Enjoy!

I've been ice fishing for 12 years and have never had a flag pop that wasn't my buddies screwing with me.   Don't get it.   A crew of us might have 3 or 4 flags pop on a trip, but it's NEVER mine.

You have to put a minnow on the hook!

Try leaving it set a little higher in the water off the bottom for pike as they feed up.

I personally recommend using a large gap single-tined hook with a medium sucker or a nice shiner 3/5 or 2/3 of the way down the water column, near weededges or dropoffs. I also keep the bait down via a 1/4 oz egg sinker pegged two or so feet above the line so they stay where they should.

LOL, I've tried it all. 

 

You guys should be giving me advice like arranging magic crystals around the tip up hole or sacrificing a virgin muskie and drinking it's blood.

Try biting a sucker minnow head off before spitting it out on the ice and then baiting a fresh sucker on the treble.

better drink lottsa PBR before biting those minnow heads off.

The tip up was in about 7ft of water in a shallow bay on the lake and we only had the sucker about 2ft down, was using a single treble hook but have now switched to a quick strike rig!
