Good Morning!

Chore time for me as well again today.  I love ferns.  Not in my yard though.  Started out with a couple and then they took over. So yesterday I started to dig them up and put them way back in the woods right side up.  They are hardy so maybe they will start up in there.  I've got some bamboo on one side of the house that I've been trying to get rid of also with little result.  The stuff keeps coming back.  Has these roots that spread like rasberry bushes [have lots of them also that are spreading].  Have a friend who tells me not to kill off the bamboo because they are loved by bees.  The stuff grows about 12 feet tall  and has tiny flowers on top toward the fall and the bees are all over them.  I'm on them in the fall with my machette wailing away.

I also use non oxy pure premium in all my small motors and boat.  No problems with them.  Regular for the truck and the van since they are driven all the time.  Get yourself those gas cards like at Cubs or any other place that has them if you want to save money on gas.  Since I shop at Cubs more than anyplace else it doesn't take me long to get 50 cents off per gallon with perfect timing for filling the tank each time  1.50 a gallon for me last fillup.  good luck.

I don't think 91 octane would give you anything but better gas mileage by a smidge.  I'm no engineer though, I'm a farmer.  Good to see the good stuff looming on the horizon LPS.  Frankly, at 48 I've finally learned that most of life's stuff takes time.  Kind of a slow and steady wins the race and the race is usually 2 steps forward 1 back etc.  If you retire you should get a part time thing...maybe make fishing related gear.  Million dollar idea, huh?

RH-your post reminds me of something I know but forget all the time.  We all have similar problems.  In this case unwanted plants around our yard.  Besides the spreading raspberries we have, which I like, we have hostas growing in spots and we've never had hostas in our yard, dogwoods pop up here and there too.  It's kind of cool that mother nature does this but when you've got a suburban planned landscape it can get away from you in a hurry.  They are invasive species.

I do have one spot in my yard where I planted Tiger Lillys that my mom gave me years ago.  Mom died but every year one day, seemingly out of nowhere, there are those orange flowers and the stand gets a little bigger every year.  I like those.

Don't worry, he's just taking a long nap. ;)

Actually, it is the bane of many an oat farmer, a scourge upon the land. We're talking the dreaded Geomys bursarius here. Known to consume entire crops in one evening if you're not careful.

That  background song in Hasenpfeffer  kinda made me think what an HSO Cooking Thread get-together would  be like down on Dotch's Farm....complete with the little office pest on mandolin.(or Smurfy)  Even the words are right.   By the way, I've got dibs on bouncing blondie.

Remember my ol neighbor Ed in Stillwater that would kill and eat the groundhog that ate his songbirds eggs?  Well he would sometimes be standing in his yard with a shovel for extremely long periods of time.  I wondered what he was doing.  I couldn't even watch for as long as he stood there.  Well I finally caught him in a good mood and asked him what he was up to.  He said I am going to cut that mole in two with the shovel as soon as he comes up.  ???  I asked if he ever got one and evidently he did many times.  Talk about patience.

As a kid I had always heard the rumor of getting a quarter for the front feet off a pocket gopher.  We lived on the edge of town in a new addition and there were lots of them.  I started catching them and throwing the feet in a Miracle Whip jar.  Well a couple of years later the jar was black and my Mom opened it to see what it was and she almost passed out.  lol  I never did find out where to turn them in.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
