reinhard1
Chore time for me as well again today. I love ferns. Not in my yard though. Started out with a couple and then they took over. So yesterday I started to dig them up and put them way back in the woods right side up. They are hardy so maybe they will start up in there. I've got some bamboo on one side of the house that I've been trying to get rid of also with little result. The stuff keeps coming back. Has these roots that spread like rasberry bushes [have lots of them also that are spreading]. Have a friend who tells me not to kill off the bamboo because they are loved by bees. The stuff grows about 12 feet tall and has tiny flowers on top toward the fall and the bees are all over them. I'm on them in the fall with my machette wailing away. I also use non oxy pure premium in all my small motors and boat. No problems with them. Regular for the truck and the van since they are driven all the time. Get yourself those gas cards like at Cubs or any other place that has them if you want to save money on gas. Since I shop at Cubs more than anyplace else it doesn't take me long to get 50 cents off per gallon with perfect timing for filling the tank each time 1.50 a gallon for me last fillup. good luck. leechlake
I don't think 91 octane would give you anything but better gas mileage by a smidge. I'm no engineer though, I'm a farmer. Good to see the good stuff looming on the horizon LPS. Frankly, at 48 I've finally learned that most of life's stuff takes time. Kind of a slow and steady wins the race and the race is usually 2 steps forward 1 back etc. If you retire you should get a part time thing...maybe make fishing related gear. Million dollar idea, huh? RH-your post reminds me of something I know but forget all the time. We all have similar problems. In this case unwanted plants around our yard. Besides the spreading raspberries we have, which I like, we have hostas growing in spots and we've never had hostas in our yard, dogwoods pop up here and there too. It's kind of cool that mother nature does this but when you've got a suburban planned landscape it can get away from you in a hurry. They are invasive species. I do have one spot in my yard where I planted Tiger Lillys that my mom gave me years ago. Mom died but every year one day, seemingly out of nowhere, there are those orange flowers and the stand gets a little bigger every year. I like those. reinhard1, bobberineyes, Dotch and 1 other

Popular Post Dotch
Chores done, cutworm trap checked and data recorded. On the way out to the cutworm trap I found a pocket gopher making a fresh mound. The hole was still open so scurried back to the barn to get a gopher trap and set it. Was a little bastage so he may or may not outwit the trap. If he torques me off too much I can get the poison out but will go this route first.Would rather not use chemical weapons due to secondary poisoning. Spent much of my youth trapping gophers after chores. Dad was pretty adamant that the hay fields be kept gopher free. Hard on sickle mowers and the badger holes were tough on everything. I bought my first wristwatch with my gopher feet money, all 50 some odd pairs of them. My Mom always liked tiger lilies too LL. One of my fond memories as a budding agronomist came after watching my Dad chop down giant ragweed behind the granary. I was about 4 years old and had received a toy gardening set for my birthday. I was just itching to try it out. I spied the tiger lily patch in the front yard and made short work of it with the hoe. I proudly proclaimed to my Mom that I'd taken care of those "weeds" for her. reinhard1, leechlake, roony and 3 others

RebelSS
We'll try to stick to things pertaining to cooking, with an occasional gopher, cow, cat, bat, rat, and gnu too, thrown in for diversity, just for you Smurfy. Dotch
Don't worry, he's just taking a long nap. Actually, it is the bane of many an oat farmer, a scourge upon the land. We're talking the dreaded Geomys bursarius here. Known to consume entire crops in one evening if you're not careful. LindellProStaf
leechlake
I just have bunnies at this point. They girdle trees in Winter and I'm okay with it. I've never killed one and don't plan on it. I've killed beavers but don't tell anyone. I don't kill stuff I don't need to. LindellProStaf and Dotch
Popular Post RebelSS
Rank those G'fers right up there with C'monks and those stinky short-tailed shrews. The shrews do eat up a lot of bugs, but those vicious C'monks undermined my front entryway slab with their Chip'n Dale underground super turnpike. "Relocated" nine of them last year, and sent twenty-one shrews to shrew heaven at the same time. Haven't seen one since...so far. bobberineyes, reinhard1, lovebigbluegills and 2 others
Popular Post Dotch
Bunnies are almost as good as squirrel LL, some think they're better. Speaking of that, Fudgie offed a squirrel while I was home. Not bad for an almost 14 year old dog. She's got a soft mouth so think we'll have it for supper, maybe have the gopher for dessert or maybe breakfast tomorrow. Practicing up for my appearance on Naked and Afraid. Or visiting RH's neighborhood. LindellProStaf, RebelSS, bobberineyes and 2 others

Popular Post leechlake
We had a golden that was a chipmunk killing machine. No clue what his technique was cause it wasn't speed. I think he had that innate killing gene some people and animals just possess. He was patient and when he killed them he seemed bummed. He was addicted though and kept killing them. He never ate em either. Whack and stack. Dotch, lovebigbluegills, LindellProStaf and 2 others
RebelSS
That background song in Hasenpfeffer kinda made me think what an HSO Cooking Thread get-together would be like down on Dotch's Farm....complete with the little office pest on mandolin.(or Smurfy) Even the words are right. LindellProStaf
Remember my ol neighbor Ed in Stillwater that would kill and eat the groundhog that ate his songbirds eggs? Well he would sometimes be standing in his yard with a shovel for extremely long periods of time. I wondered what he was doing. I couldn't even watch for as long as he stood there. Well I finally caught him in a good mood and asked him what he was up to. He said I am going to cut that mole in two with the shovel as soon as he comes up. ??? I asked if he ever got one and evidently he did many times. Talk about patience. As a kid I had always heard the rumor of getting a quarter for the front feet off a pocket gopher. We lived on the edge of town in a new addition and there were lots of them. I started catching them and throwing the feet in a Miracle Whip jar. Well a couple of years later the jar was black and my Mom opened it to see what it was and she almost passed out. lol I never did find out where to turn them in. lovebigbluegills and Dotch
