new sight

So I gotta get a new bow string and it's time to upgrade the bow sight to. I've been looking at the trophy ridge react one. My brother in law has one of the HHA single pin adjustable sights. I currently have a 4 pin and got them sighted for 10 to 40.  Not sure about the single pins starting at 20 yards so does anyone have these type of sights? Just wondering if 10 yard shots or less are a guess or if the sight is far off.  I would like something that shoots a little farther and have been leaning toward the single pin adjustable over multiple pins. We are planning a trip this fall to chase mIle deer in the dakotas so any advice on sights would help.  Thanks in advance

j, unless you're shooting very low poundage there's no real need for a 10 yard pin regardless of what type of sight you have.  My son is the only person I know who's got separate pins for below 20 yards and it's because he's shooting pretty low poundage still (also because he shoots fairly heavy arrows and has a short drawlength too).  I don't know of a single guy who uses a pin for under 20 yards otherwise and I know a ton of guys who shoot.  Unless there's something really unique about your set up there's just no need for it IMO (and the opinion of a ton of others).

I shoot a 3 pin slider from Montana Black Gold and I like it.  HHA and SpotHogg make excellent sights too.  IMO those three are top of the line.  For me the 3 pin (20, 30, 40) slider is the best of both worlds.  Regardless of what you choose, if you do a good job out muley hunting there's no need to shoot over 50 yards so no need for a sight that allows otherwise.  Get dialed in from 50 and in and get within that range on a buck!  Deer beyond that are pretty to look at and fun to take pictures of, but most guys can't ethically fling arrows at that distance.

Good luck and have fun preparing!

Agree with Scoot about not needing a 10 yard pin unless you shoot low poundage.  I set my first pin for 20 yards and use it for anything between 0 and 25 yards and put my pin right where I want it to hit out to 20 yards.  And I don't shoot fast bows typically around 320 IBO bows shooting in the 260s fps with a 400 grain arrow.  I still like multi pin sights and there are lots of good ones out there.  Just make sure the pins are durable.  Spot Hogs, Montana Black Gold, Axcel, Trophy Ridge, Sword, all make good sights.

I'm not an expert archer by any means, but I found I shoot about an inch high at 10 yards using my 20 yard pin.  55lb draw, not sure of my draw length, but I'm 6'1".

I have a trophy ridge 5 pin sight and have them set at 20, 30, 40, 50 and about 75.  The last 3 pins are for screwing around with friends.  I'm not confident enough to shoot past 30 yards.

I hunt with a Montana Black Gold 4 pin fixed sight.  It's about as good a fixed pin as you can get.

I switch to an HHA Slider sight for shooting 3D's in the summer.  I'd hunt with the HHA except I hunt with a bow quiver, and it's difficult to get behind the quiver to adjust it.

Try using your 30 pin at 10 yards once

I shoot a HHA and while hunting out west set it at 32 yards, that puts me 4" high at 20 and 6" low at 40. Freestanding hunting I set it at 23 yards that keeps me in a whitetails vitals zero to 32 yards.

I also shoot an HHA slider and I love it. I hunt exactly like Archerysniper described. for whitetails, I keep the pin around the 27 yd mark and that allows me no more than 3" high or low out to 34yds. I have tested it in person and settled on that magic number using some archery software.

I hate the clutter of a fixed pin sight and have made the mistake of using the wrong pin when I had a fixed pin sight. For any animal inside of 30 yds, I have my pin set in a way that I already know where it hits and I don't have to adjust it. If the animal is farther, I routinely practice out to 60yds and would feel confident making that shot on a calm animal, but I still limit myself to 50. Archery is an up close game and I want to get closer if I can. The nice thing is at that distance, a calm animal won't notice the small movement needed to adjust the sight any more than they will notice you using rangefinder to confirm the distance.

Despite all that chatter about long distances, I've never flung an arrow at an animal further than 27yds and thats the one I missed using the wrong pin. Every animal I've shot was inside of 20yds.
