It's Time to Start Thinking Spring Turkey!

Always have turkeys on my mind!

I know for sure my son is ready for spring.  We checked our trail cams last week, heard some hens up the hill, and he wanted to sneek up to them.  We did, snuck right into the middle of them.  Should have seen his face, when the woods moved with 40+ birds scooting around and jumping up all around us!!  It was fantastic.  He asked probably 5 times on the way home, "I can hunt this spring with you, right?"

Don, you are one sick puppy!  There are deer to be shot, man!  Turkey season will come, but I haven't shot a deer yet this year and I'd sure like to.  I'm excited to get out this spring though--  I THINK (maybe) my little girl is going to hunt turkeys with me this spring.  I hope she sticks with that- I'd be thrilled to put a bird in front of her!

That's great Scoot.  Hope she goes for it like Ryan has.  Always love to see the kids get involved.

BTW, I'm still bowhunting myself and don't want to cut this season short, but dang, apps are due!  What are you supposed to do?

Me too!  I'm skeptical, but I'm going to try make it as fun as I possibly can for her and hope I find a bird to cooperate.

You mentioned applications- when are they due?

Good luck finding a deer!  I'm hoping to take Ryan out to ND this weekend in search of some headgear.  I think we have a decent chance if we can get out there.

Haven't seen a bird in a year and I have standing corn for whatever critters, what freaks them out of an area ? No 1 is seeing any birds around. Usually the 2 dairy farms across the road have birds but reporting 0 also. Are coyotes tough on them ? But the field is stuffed with pheasants so idk.Thankfully at my dads there's plenty to go around an hour away so applying there now watch like last year it'll reverse itself lol.

Haven't seen a bird in a year

Hard to say what happened.  I believe the good old days of turkey hunting are already gone.  They multiplied and moved into most every area of the state, and now they're just staying in the most prime locations.  The hard back to back winters of a couple years back really did a number on them.

The numbers are down on the bird that's for sure in my areas . I mainly hunt the north end of 222 . In 2007-2010 that was the golden years , I could not look out in my field with out seeing birds . Now I see a bird a few times a year and not flocks of them .  I still try only got skunked  once

When we the 2016 regs. coming out ?

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
