well I think my decision has been made. so, Friday morning I get a text from my 17 year old granddaughter, at 6;45 no less!:mad: she had this mission to be at cabelas for door busters to buy goose decoys!! yea my granddaughter. anyway she needed to text me to tell me she had just won a $350.00 smoker.

so now, I just gotta come up with a mischeivious game plan to transfer ownership!!!!!!!!:D:P;)

What kind of smoker is it?

I'm not against an electric smoker if it's what you have or if you just want it to be a little easier but to me there is a big difference if flavor between charcoal and electric.

I disagree a little bit with Del (what a surprise) but I wouldn't suggest a pork butt for your first cook. Pork Butt is a long cook with an unnerving stall period. I always suggest chicken for your fist smoke. It's cheap and doesn't take very long to cook. Once you see how easy it is, you can move up to ribs and butts. That's just my opinion of course.

Homemade smoked ribs is the best thing in the world!

Took you long enough to disagree.

Pork butt is really good and pretty hard to wreck.  Also cheap. That is why I recommended it.  Overcook chicken, dry like dust.

Gotta second pork butt. Never messed one up in 30 years. But then, I've never fudged a chicken, either. Learned many years ago low and slow is the way to go. Kinda like a first date.

:P...I prefer this guy for low and slow on Rebs rules. After seasoning smurf , keep Er simple and do a big batch of jerky, fill all the grates, only takes a couple hours but you can chew on for a couple weeks..

And you can invite bobber and I up to watch and dispense advice.

I did say it was just my opinion. Of course you are right and I am wrong, as usual.

Not to take anyone side in this dissagreement, but ive tasted some pretty raunchy pork shoulder berfore and it was not good. it can be ruined. it can be very easy to do. but a guy has to know some basics on smoking also. Ya just dont stick it in a smoker and expect to get pulled pork out of it. ther is a process.

Sorry Dave.  didn't mean it the way it  turned out to sound.

I think it is because I like to eat pork rather than chicken although I end up eating a lot more chicken than pork.

The whole concept of a smoker is it's simple definition, Low and Slow.  Low temps and planning ahead so you have plenty of time.  So regardless of what you smoke it will take longer but the results will be awesome.  Learning to use different woods for smoking is another aspect of it.  I would not start off with mesquite, way too strong.  Start off with something mild like apple, cherry, oak for example.  Hickory is about as strong as I get and cherry or apple is my favorite for general use.  Keeping your damper open or adjusting it is another factor.  I keep mine open for the most part.  Using the water pan is another.  Used to keep some meats moist.  Drip pans to catch the goodness ect.  Read up on it or ask here for ideas.  We are ready to help if needed.  good luck.
