Popular Post leechlake
Last year after a duck hunting trip near Devils Lake I took off for our cabin near Walker. I was in no hurry so I stopped in every small town the last 80 miles or so and looked for a butcher shop to buy bacon. I found 6 different shops and besides just the awesomeness of visiting with the small town butchers I picked up some various bacon and obviously all was great/excellent. Frankly, I accidentally fulfilled a bucket list item in my life.Next time you're sitting around on a weekend looking for something to do hit the road and give it a try, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. marine_man, bobberineyes, reinhard1 and 2 others
RebelSS
Great idea! I would, but I'm not sure my F-150 could carry 3,000 lbs of bacon.... chaffmj
reinhard1
I agree with that. Why? because most of the small shops smoke their own. They tend to smoke the bacon longer than the stuff you buy in the stores and use different cures ect. When you can stop by at these places or try to smoke your own. good luck. LindellProStaf
Leech, great idea. I love to sample other butcher shops bacon and sausages. I haven't stopped at any for awhile. There aren't as many butcher shops as there used to be. Too bad too. I hope they come back into style.
Jim Almquist
I really like the fact that my butcher shop will ask how much and how thick and slice it right off a whole chunk in front of you. They bring the first slice over and ask if it is the right thickness. Adolph/Stokkes at the corner of Midway and State Highway 2 in what I think is Proctor. It is usually $5.99 a pound but often have it on sale for $3.99. Well worth the money! chaffmj
ThunderLund78
I love hitting small town meat markets, not just for bacon but to compare all their product. Sticks, jerky, dogs/brats/sausage. Luckily, down in my area, there's plenty of Czech and German heritage, so every town with 500 people has at least one meat market. I don't have to put on too many miles to hit up at least 10 in a day. If your ever find yourself down in "Bohonk" country, some of my favorites are - Pekarna's in Jordan, Skluzacek's in New Prague, Edel's in Montgomery, and the County Market in Lonsdale has an excellent meat counter, It's within the grocery store but I believe it's independently run. pegleg and chaffmj
