Trout Reports

I have been battling the flu but absolutely had to get out of the house yesterday. I hit one stretch for about 2 hours and was exhausted and had to call it a day.fishing was decent, with 12 browns and 2 brooks to hand.

With the low snow amounts we had before the melt, streams have already cleared up or close to it. Water levels are low for this time of year.

Feeling better today and wanted to try and find some bigger fish and new water today. Hit a few lower stretches I haven't fished before of the bigger streams/rivers in my area. Found some great looking water, didn't land anything big, but caught about 25 browns or so using various presentations. Lost the two biggest of the day, one of which I think was really nice but never got a look.

Even the lower parts of the bigger streams were pretty clear with the exception of one. For those fly guys, I haven't seen much insect activity stream side or in the water despite the temps and haven't seen a rise from a fish yet this spring.

Short outing today, cool and cloudy after heavy rains yesterday. Figured most streams would be muddy so went smaller and upstream. First stop looked like cappuccino, and only fished a few minutes with no fish before heading to a stream I knew would be clear, which it was. Fished two short stretches. 2 hours, 31 browns to hand if my count was on. Nothing very big but there was lots of action. Fish were active, saw lots of rises today for the first time.

I hit a trout stream that I did very well the last few years on Saturday but blanked. I did not even see a fish. All my good spots were ghost towns. I did see plenty of food though. I tried downstream and the same. I think I'll move more upstream this weekend.

Any thoughts?

Duh! Missed the Panther in the first pict. What size lures do you throw most? Curious on the swimbaits, which ones are you tossing. Getting ready for MN opener in 2 weekends!

JPZ,

You do the trout thing too. Kinda glad MN does'nt have a bass season like SD - it might take away from my trout fishing. Where you going for opener? We usually go to Whitewater, sometimes Forestville, week after opener. Yo-zuri pins minnow - outstanding!!

Panther Martins are a great spinner for trout, used em for many years. Used to use bait quite a bit too, water worms, half crawlers. Then I started using rapalas, 7's mostly. Now I have a Yo-zuri pins minnow on 90% of the time, twitching it like a jerkbait for bass. Spinners in fast chutes and riffles - minnowbaits in all trouty places.

I was a Mepps, rooster, arctic, whatever guy. But last year I crushed them with the panthers. They give a better vibration I believe. Even more than that sonic? rooster. They are my go to. I still will tie something else if I need the color.

However I will always have crawlers or leaf worms with me. I also use a variety of shallow raps.

Getting excited...

Blanked again yesterday. Saw plenty of suckers and chubs. Trying different presentations and still nothing. I've always done well on this stretch. Moved down and a little bit up, no results. Been fishing SE MN.

Any suggestions?

That stretch of what? Clue as to which stream? Not like they are secrets.

Don't forget small crankbaits in neutral colors. I prefer sinking Rapalas in the #3 and 3% size, gray and black or Brown trout colors.

Small plugs will sometimes outperform spinners when the water is very clear, i.e. later in the summer and early fall. Not so much in the dirty water typical for spring.

I have never been a fan of Mepps spinners for trout. They put on extra beads and details that seem to add nothing but a dollar or so to the price tag. The more stripped down Worden spinners work better for me. Larger ones for muddy water, smaller ones for clearer conditions. Nothing but silver blades with black squirrel hair in my small tackle box.

Its not a secret to those that want to dump mattresses, tvs, recliners (now burnt), animal pelts, bricks and cinder blocks, McDonalds bags, etc...

I was at that creek on saturday. I seen the animal pelt and couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was!

As far as suckers go, I was having the same problem on a different creek on was on earlier that same day. When the suckers are running, does that negatively effect the trout at all?

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
