FshBloodRiverMud
Headed to LOTW next week.8 Guys; 2 houses.Cooking stove (No oven) and we will bring a grill; maybe an outside fish fryer too. Got any ideas for meals? We do at least 1 trip every winter. I laughed when i found out there was no oven, because this group of guys usually comes up with about 50 frozen pizzas...and nothing else. Would like to avoid messy dishes
pikestabber
If you have time to pre-cook meals and bag them, that's a time saver if you'd rather be playing cards, jigging 'eyes, and tipping a few instead of cooking up big meals. Most things can be cooked, cooled down, then bagged in gallon freezer bags or Tupperware and easily re-heated in a kettle or skillet with minimal dishes involved. *Chili (proceed with caution ) *Stew *Spaghetti (sauce in one bag, cooked noodles in the other...reheat noodles by dropping in boiling water for a minute or two) All of those are pretty hearty, and nothing beats a hot meal while ice-fishing (I assume you're staying in sleeper houses and not cabins?). How many days? If it's just a long weekend, that could get you by if you like all of those. Otherwise, cut up some venison steak or beef steak and do a big skillet meal with thinly sliced potatoes, peppers, onions, diced garlic, jalapenos (olive oil and whatever seasonings). There are lots of one-pot-wonders you can do in a pinch, and all can be cut up and bagged ahead of time so you can just splash a bit of oil in a pan, dump in the ingredients, and let it simmer until done. If the weather is decent, and by all accounts it should be good enough, the grill is hard to beat. Meat, bread, fire, and beer will get you through any length of stay. Drop the dumplings in and cook per the Bisquick directions.Beer brats- brown the brats pour some beer in and let simmer for 30 minutes. Hawg
I just bought a Pizzazz for my house. It's one of those weird looking rotary pizza oven things. It makes pizza's, egg rolls, pizza rolls, and pocket type stuff phenomenally well. You might think of getting one or borrowing one for the weekend. Great little units. Getanet
Recently rented a sleeper on Red, which only had a cooktop, no stove. Luckily I asked the same question and someone recommended vacuum sealing and freezing meals. All I had to do was bring a large stockpot to boil the meals in hot water. No dirty dishes which was a huge bonus - and you could reuse the water in the pot as many times as necessary. If you don't have a vacuum sealer this obviously won't work. But meals we had included:*Biscuits and gravy. Best meal of the trip. I didn't freeze the gravy, as it probably would have separated. Just sealed the bag. Cooked the biscuits ahead of time and reheated.*Pot Roast *Tacos meat *Mashed potatoes. Just sealed the bag, didn't vacuum seal it or freeze the potatoes. As long as you have a vacuum sealer you can get pretty creative.

Can also use Ziploc freezer bags, they're heavy duty enough to handle the job and pack tighter in the trash. If you want to freeze them, put them in a cooler while they're thawed and freeze them in the cooler so they pack tighter. Just plan ahead so the first meals you'll eat are at the top of the cooler and work your way down. You can get a lot of food in a small cooler this way. Learned it on a trip to BWCA. live4chrome
x2 on the stock pot with pre bagged meals. We end up going to the bar to eat a lot too. Its worth the extra $ to have your fish cooked up for lunch or dinner, use a real bathroom. The fish house smells a lot better when you aren't frying fish in it thats for sure. B-man715
My all time favorite stove top meal in the shack is Sloppy Joes You can make a meal for one guy or 10 guys at once with zero prep work and only one dish to clean. Slap it onto some gas station buns and top with shredded cheese and onions if you want to get fancy Spaghetti is easy too, but has more dishes (2) and you'll want fresh water...... but lake water adds an unforgettable "gourmet flavor"
