senkos

I have tried senkos and I love the action, but there is one thing, they are not very tough!! It seems like they go to heck right away. I would think the price you pay for them they would be a little bit more durable. Wondering if anyone else has had the same problem.

Yup, they get beat-up pretty quickly.

Try a knock off brand(Case, Yum, et.al.). In most cases I have had as much success with the cheaper brands.

SERIOUSLY! It was THIS big!

tracey. we had a big discussion on these a while back. it is the same with most of the brands. they are soft and do tear easily. but most of us agree'd they are worth it.many of us use other brands instead of the yahmamoto (?) brand. still, you use a lot, but it's a little cheaper. del

To help your senkos or other brands of these types of stickbaits last longer you can put a split ring around the stickbait and place it in the middle - this is for rigging the bait wacky style. Then you insert the hook in between the split ring and the worm, this way the hook will never go into the worm, making it last longer.
Another thing I also do is when one side of the worm gets torn up is to just put the hook in the other end of the bait, the fish seem to like it the same as when you hook it in the bigger side. It also will still have that wobble as it falls that these baits are known for. One last thing you can do if the bait starts to get torn up towards one of the ends is to rip it right in half, then just rig it back on your hook wieghtless and fish with a shorter version of the bait. It probably will not have the same action as it did when it was bigger, but you will still get bites on it if the bass are reasonably active. Ripping it in half will also gaurantee you get your moneys worth out of everystick bait you buy.

Case Magic Stiks are an improvement over the senkos in my opinion. I no longer consider these an immitation bait. They are more durable with the same great action and sink rate, plus they are American made and much cheaper.

I like to use an o-ring wacky style to keep the middle of the worm from tearing up... You can use these t-rigged until they start to tear up on top and then use them wacky if you can keep your worm on for that long.

We had some fun head-to-head competition last week with the senko vs. the Magic Stik on smallies. The Magic Stik became the clear favorite - not only outlasting in durability, but clearly outfishing as well.

One of these photo's you can see the o-ring wacky technique. Normally for bass it will slide up the line and not damage the worm - you can also hook through the mid section of the worm wacky, but eventually the worm will tear in the middle.

Ahh , the never ending quest to find something as good as a Senko! I have a gym bag full of imitators ,some I use ,most I dont. I really think its a confidence thing,Im sure that most work as good at least, but I just cant do it. I have not tried the Case ones yet . Who can you get a couple samples from? Always willing to find that one magic bait thats as good as the Senko(as long as they have watermelon/black flake, and green pumpkin/black flake smile.gif )

I wasn't using circle hooks, just a plain 2/0 weedless worm hook. Do you use mono or braid? I was using 14lb XT and none of my strikes were noticable except for that heavy feeling. The only noticable strikes were from sunny's.

I feel the strike maybe 90% of the time, the other 10% is line movement or they are just there. I use braid on my spinning rods and fluorocarbon on my baitcasters. I use the 5 and 5.5" baits on the baitcaster, otherwise I use the spinning rod mainly. You will feel more bites with braid due to the low stretch. Fluoro is a bit better than mono for stretch and pretty manageable on a baitcaster.

Is there an issue with visibility while using braid (Power Pro)? Also does the braid tend to float causing a slower drop of the bait or does it drop fast because of the smaller diameter? I was using a Berkley Power Worm because that all they had at the place I stopped. It was pretty light and it dropped very slowly.

Thanks again,

Granny

I don't believe that line color plays a negative role in fish being able to detect a bait. Look at the hooks hanging down on cranks, etc. I've never seen a difference myself. I've fished with very experienced tournament walleye fishermen that use bright green line in clear water jigging eyes. I've always felt that if it works for them on eyes, bass surely wouldn't care. I always use high visibility line on braids for plastics. I do color the last few feet of line with a dark permanent marker, but I really don't think it makes a difference either way (I only do this on certain rods when I think of it).

The key on the Magic Stik and Magic Stik immitation baits is that they have salt added to the plastic mixture to increase the sink rate. I've used powerbait and those weightless too with success, but they are a different bait than the Magic Stick. The "no-action" of the Magic Stick along with the relatively slow fall with no weight needed is what makes the bait effective in my opinion.

I've done some testing on the Magic Stick vs. the senko for sink rates and have been quite impressed with the quality of Case products. I'll post some of that info. in the future.

Thanks for all the info!

I should be getting ready for "the big day" (24th), but I think I talked the wife-to-be into another night of fishing! I think these baits might come in handy while fishing a deep clear Bass lake in Virginia (honeymoon). I only have a couple days left to practice using worms, so I hope the fish are biting!

Later,

Granny

Yea, the o-rings you get at a hardware store. Just hook through the o-ring without hooking the worm. This keeps the worm from tearing up and prolongs the life quite a bit. They slide up the string and don't shake off as easy either with the ring holding them on the line. 1/4" ID for 4 and 4.5" Magic Stiks and Senkos and 5/16" ID for the 5 and 5.5".

Do you Senko or immatation users have trouble with hooking fish too deep? Last night was my first time using this bait and I had one bass hooked very deep in its throat. I just cut my line and let her go. Does anyone have any good or bad experiences with the circle hooks?

Granny, was that with a circle hook? I try to keep in pretty good contact with the bait and don't allow a lot of slack. Just enough so that I can feel a fish playing around without them feeling me on the other end... I don't give them a lot of time when I feel the bite and rarely if ever hook fish deep. I use a standard 2/0 worm hook, but know guys who use the circle hook with no problem. Sounds like they getting too much time with your bait.

There are times when you need to let the bait fall vertical on a slack or semi-slack line, just keep in contact with your bait as much as possible to try to avoid hooking deep.

See you this weekend

Dan, must be a rough life... I think we know who the new "smallie magnet" is. I haven't hooked a smallie that size since early/mid april! I have been putting my time in searching/wading for new waters so that might be part of the problem but there's bound to be a nice 18-20 incher waiting for me around the next bend in the river.

On the subject of Case magic stiks. They are awesome! I agree with Dan, they really hold up a lot better and feel a lot like senkos. Their drop rate is perfect and action is the same, if not better than senkos. Plus they have some great colors/combos. Man, you'd think I was one of their sponsors... I wonder if they are looking smile.gif

Dan, we'll have to hook up again sometime for some pool 4 smallies! I've been itched to get down there again. I'm finally moving (all of next week), but after I'm settled in, I'm back on the river!

hey dan:

i thought that you already fished everyday. there is no way someone can be as good as you without spending every waking hour on the lake. smile.gif

i am trying to devise a plan where i can run my business from laptop while fishing. if i get a satellite hook up for my computer and headset for my cell phone.... hum... i wonder if it will work. i'm sure it will! i could just show up at the store from Nov. to April... smile.gif

there has got to be a way to do it.
