First house of the year breaks through the ice

this happened on a lake 10 miles east of Willmar. According to the info where I seen this the ice was only 8 inches thick. the guy was pulling it out on the lake with a four wheeler and was able to unhook the four wheeler before that went in too.

Use common sense!!!! There's only 8 inches! It's still early! It's not even December! Your bringing a couple thousand pound ice house on 8 inches or less. Use common sense, it's your own fault.

yea what is worse yet is in the second pic you can see another ice castle and four wheeler out on the same lake. some people just push their luck and at times it bites them in the you know what. the good thing is from the report no one was hurt when it happened.

Wow is all i can say!!! Up here in maine i like 10 inches before i haul mine out!! That is after drilling holes all the way out a few days before to check the ice!

But wait, isn't this the same house as the one on another thread that said it was on minnetaga south of Atwater? It looks like the same roof and the same guy with the same jacket in two bottom pictures?

The dnr already has recommended thickness charts. What I feel will happen is the insurance companies will not cover you if you decide to venture out on thinner ice.

How does one ever get something like that out of a lake? Not like it's a wheeler or a small car..does it become a ''reef'' or are there means to get it out and the owner receives a HUGE bill for his stupidity?

If I'm not mistaken I think the owner is required to get it out within a certain time period (2 weeks?). If they don't then the state will do it and the owner pays that bill along with fines. I don't know for sure, just something I think I heard some time so I could be incorrect.

Leech where I first seen this was on another site so you could be right about what lake and where it is at. the site I seen it on said it was 10 miles east of Wilmar but they could of been wrong. I also didn't check the Wilmar area forum on here. I just some one posted it there too.

They are removing it in the picture below. They send a person to the house if still partially above ice or a diver under water if it's submerged. Once the house is hooked up they run the cabe through the pulley on the trip-pod you see next to the house. That cable continues on to a pulley secured to the posts that are put in holes cut in the ice. Then onward to shore where a tow truck or large truck is hooked up to pull the cable. If you look closely you can see the cable laying on the ice as it isn't pulled tight yet. Once they start pulling it's just a matter of walking it up onto the ice and then pulled a safe distance away form the hole. Saw it once in person and no, fortunately it was't my house.

And yes, BobT is right. The clock is running from the time it submerged till you get it removed. If you don't remove it before the deadline they (DNR) will.
