Subject: Model 30 8in blade sharpening.

Hi I have two 8in ripper blades, and was wondering what it would cost to have them sharpened and sent back to me?

Response:

The price is $26.25 for each set of blades, which includes freight. You can send the blades, along with a check to Feldmann Engineering & Mfg., 520 Forest Ave., Sheboygan Falls, WI 53085.

My response.

I'm not asking for a new set, just to sharpen two blades

his response.

Yes. That is the price to sharpen blades - $26.25 per blade.

Anybody with a grinder and a file can sharpen those. If you don't want to try take them to a law mower place. Very easy to do.

I tried that once. Guy did it sharp has hell, but when I put it on the auger and drilled a hole it was cutting like it was dull has heck. I'm guessing that somehow the angle/pitch of the cutting edge had gotten changed, and caused the issue. It cut but like dump. So i bought a new bit and everything was great. Now after three years just gonna send in both the blades to get sharpend by a professional thinking he will be able to fix my original blade to the correct angle/pitch. After some guys directed me to some different sites it looks like $25 will get them both done and sent back. Thats about the cheapest i've seen one new blade sell for so figuring I might has well send two in to get sharpened so I have a spare blade. Crazy Jiffy was charging what they are.

I bought the Jiffy Blade Sharpener for $40. It works good and that way I can sharpen the blade anytime I think it is getting dull. They say it also works on the STX blades also. It is basically a small sharpening stone set at the correct angle for the blade.

I see Reeds online has them for $40. I think I got mine from Fleet Farm for about the same price.

I made a mistake when I said anybody can sharpen them, I should have said anyone with common sense and basic mechanical ability can sharpen them. If you sharpen both sides, top and bottom they will skip off the ice. They need to be sharpened like a lawnmower blade, scissors, chain saw, etc where the bottom HAS to be flat and the edge not rolled. Chipper blades don't get real dull often but the fact they can be easily sharpened is a huge selling point for chipper blades. I'll never have another Lazer.

The Jiffy has a round plate that rides on the ice. That plate determines the depth of cut by how much of the cutting edge makes contact with the ice.

When a blade is sharpened, material taken off and depth of cut less. Depending on how much damage the blade had determines how much material is taken off to put a good edge back on.

At some point to compensate for that the blade mount has to be repitched. This is another reason why you don't want to push on or bang the cutting edge into the ice. That will bend the mount.

So your blades could have been sharpened correctly but the mount needs to be adjusted.

If you could bring your Jiffy in and have the mount adjusted it would be brought back to specs. Specs and a sharpened blade might not work for reasons I described.

Can you adjust the mount yourself. Yes but you have to be sure not to distort it to where the mount isn't perfectly straight. If you end up with a warp your going to be breaking blades off.

This is true for any single blade auger chipper or ripper. When I'm asked can you sharpen chipper or ripper blades I baulk because I have no control over the mount. Same is true for a Lazer. Blades could be sharpened correctly but the mount is bent and a even a new set won't cut correctly. Nils heads have are blades and mount as one unit. Its all there for me to adjust if need be.

Frank, you're right but if your blade is so bad you actually have to take that much off you have bigger problems than just resharpening. That would be have to be an extreme case. I think most people sharpen chipper blades just because they think they should, not because they need it. I would never attempt to sharpen a lazer blade, that is very touchy. Regardless though, swapping out is probably the easiest solution if you've never done it.

How much do you think it should cost? Do you know how much it will cost them to ship that package from their facility to a residential address in Iowa via UPS? Probably somewhere around $12.00 or more. If you were going to invest money into the tooling necessary to sharpen these and hire employees to do the work and pay wages, benefits, insurance and employment taxes and rent or purchase the commercial space plus pay $12.00 to ship them back to the consumer, how much would YOU charge for this service?

Plus something looks fishy to me about that BB Sales outfit that are selling brand new Jiffy blades for $23.00. They have no feedback on Amazon at all and although I did not spend very much time looking, I can't seem to find anyone on the internet selling these blades that cheap. Maybe they are perfectly legit but I would beware if it were me.

Lmao thats the stupidest argument I've ever heard. After a few PM 's I have gotten about Twenty sites now that will sharpen a blade for around $9, and ship with usps for $5. Looks like plenty of business show it can be done and profitable at a reasonable price level. My two blades can get sent and sharpened for $25. Which I plan to do. What is sad is that Jiffy prefers to put a rediculous price out for servicing their own product. If anyone should be able to service sharpening blades at a reasonable price it should be Jiffy. when I buy a tire and get a flat the tire shop doesn't charge me the price of a new tire to repair a common flat tire puncture.

I think that $25 to $30 is what those cost new most places. Many times a manufacturer will price things higher than the market to protect and send business to their dealers. The manufacturer of any outdoor product seldom has the best price.

Blade i ordered from them came yesterday. It is an offical Jiffy 8in chipper blade. in the original sealed package. Can't argue about anything, and shipping was fairly fast.

Didn't expect the best price, but I did expect a reasonable price.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
