Anybody been out on Mille Lacs for Smallies? With the low wind forecast tomorrow I am thinking about making a run up there. I have never had great luck there, but hoping to get into them one of these days.

I was up there this past weekend. I thought the bite would be a lot better then it was but I still put quite a few fish in the boat. Things should be really turning on this week. Water temps were in the upper 50's low 60's. Saw tons and tons of fish in the shallows but a lot of fish would not bite. Ended up with 3 fish over 5lbs and 6 fish over 4lbs in about 8 total hours of fish. Did quite a few between 3-4lbs as well. Find the shallow rocks with sand transition next to it and you will find the smallies. They should be looking to spawn here in the next week or so. Good luck.

Smallies can be tough when they're in shallow clear water. They can really get persnickety. Usually if you can see them, they saw you a long time ago and it can be tough to get them to bite.

About all you can do is get as far off them as you can and bomb something out there that's pretty subtle. I've done ok swimming really small (4"), thin, translucent (my favorite is clear with little tiny black flakes) jigworms on a 1/16 oz jighead. Also done well using 6# braid, nose hooking a senko-type stick worm (tubes work too) and just slowly reeling it in or even dragging it way behind the boat. They don't hit very hard so the braid kind of helps you feel them. The rod just loads up all of a sudden. Light hair jigs work too.

Was up there the past weekend and caught a lot of smallies on shallow rocks with either leeches or rainbows for live bait. Lipless cranks also managed a few. They are very active and aggressive now you just have to find them. I found most on shoreline rocks rather than mainlake reefs.

I have never been on Mille Lacs and was thinking of going out there with

my brother inlaw from Arizona the week of the 8th. Looking for help on

what bays to go to and what to look for. I have an idea but any help would be

appreciated.

Saturday there was one. Sunday there were two parked there catching smallies. Same resort. Probably can't say the name but orange and yellow out of isle. Only ones I have seen doing that.

That's surprising about that launch going after smallies. I know the owner of that resort is one of the few owners that was fighting the new smallie regulations and trying to protect smallies. I wonder if they were keeping them.

True the fish will be released in the tourney scenario (who knows on the launch), but I still dont consider that very sporting. IMO

Not unless you are Captain Hollywood from Wicked Tuna. I heard they had a boat flying high above Mille Lacs looking for circling muskies in schools of thousands. Sent in "Hollywood" to take care of business. Should be in an upcoming episode.

You answered your own question. Bass fisherman have a catch-and-release ethic rivaled only by muskie chasers. Bed fishing for bass is not the problem you seem to think. Go ahead and pick a lake and do some bed fishing this week and post pics of what you catch. It's not as automatic as you seem to think.

By the same logic it is not as automatic for the launches. And what would you rather bed fish in, a launch or a bass boat with power poles.

I don't have a problem with the launches trying for smallies (yet), who knows, they may practice C&R anyway. Looks like they are adapting.

      we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.

      I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.

      reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
