The goose and I are going to do some snooping today as soon as I can break away from this fire panel issue.

Let me amend that statement. As soon as she is dresses, we gone shroom'n smile I so like it when the weekend Oncall techs know their way around a building.

They--morels--are not here in Fillmore County. At least, they aren't out on my ground yet.

I looked for about an hour in some of my prime spots today, and did not find so much as a single gray. Everything--the thickness of the undergrowth, the size of the May apples, the trees not being fully leafed out--tells me my patch in Fillmore County is at least a week away, maybe closer to two.

This is mostly flat ground, thickly timbered, with rather heavy clay-laced soil. I don't doubt people are finding morels around here on south-facing slopes and/or in sandy areas, but definitely not where I was today.

I am going to try another patch of my timber in Fillmore County tomorrow that has lighter soil, but I am not expecting much there, either. The big decision for me is whether to come up next weekend and try again, or wait another week after that.

I checked my spot this a.m. This spot produced big last year. This will be the start of it for me. I found a bunch of tiny ones just barely popping up. They were literally thimble sized. Rain today. Heat tomorrow. Morels for dinner on Wed! Morel hunters - enjoy the next three weeks - it should be good!

A quick look through my sandier-soiled timber produced nothing for morels this morning, either. No surprise.

I checked my asparagus patches while I was out there and found just a few shoots out, with the biggest maybe 12" high. This supports my hunch that the peak of the morel season in Fillmore County is almost two weeks away. When the big yellow morels are out nearby this asparagus will be 2' high or more, and starting to go to seed.

As an aside, living in southeast Iowa for some years now I am still struck by the difference just over a hundred miles in latitude can make. Johnson County, Iowa is usually a little over a week ahead of Fillmore County in terms of growing seasons, but this was just the right time to see what that week and half of difference looks like.

Very nice looking batch. Tomorrow will be my first day out this season for my sunnier locations. No need to trampel and destroy anything; this has been a slow start. Perfect for a good season. Timely moisture around the area today, before a big warm up is going to get things to pop. Some spots of mine don't have a chance in popping anything until the end of this week.

Had an hour to run out and check a property today before work. Found a few. I'm sure I passed some by as I was moving quickly to check multiple areas. But definitely not in full swing yet.

I found my first of the year today....they were TINY. Only about 1'' or so. Not drying out yet, either. I didn't look very hard after I found the first few because I didn't want to step on any that were still under the leaf litter.

Last weekend was too early for my ground in Fillmore County.

I can't make it up there this weekend, so I am hoping that the last day of May and the first day of June I find big yellows around the Preston area, but not big rotting or dried out yellows. I believe it will be close.

Stick - all the ones I'm finding are tiny as well. I found my first ones 5 days ago - just barely peeking out of the ground. They've gotten a little bigger - but not growing as fast/big as I thought they would. Right now, I'm finding them about the size of a man's thumb. I'm just leaving them for now. For perspective - last year, the same spot produced morels about the size of a pop cans. I'm not sure if these are just the early ones and bigger guys will sprout soon or if this is all I'll have this year. I keep seeing all these nice reports and am feeling left out!

The ones I found today were smaller than a thumb, that's for sure. I'll be happy to wait for a while....not worth picking one that's an inch high, and if someone gets them in the meantime, oh well.

I did spend a few more hours this afternoon looking...didn't find any. Can't say I looked that hard, though, as I didn't want to step on any that were just peeking up.

Anybody in northern MN (Bemidji and north) finding morels in their repeat spots?

I have a few unproven but promising areas I checked today without any luck. Wondering if anybody has found their proven spots to be productive yet. We have the moisture, and the heat looks like it's sticking around, so it has to be close.

Found some today. Surprised to find a number of dried up old ones already. Bad year overall so far. The spots that were producing bunches last year I'm lucky to find one in. Still delicious though.

      As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…

      I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...

      Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?

      I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.

      Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.

      The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.

      It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.

      We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there,but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
