favorite ways to northern fish

My fondest memories are of casting red & white daredevils or mepps spinners from shore or off the dock. I've learned many different way to catch pike over the years, but if you want to bring out the kid in me, thats how.

Big flashy safety pin style spinners have gotten me the best numbers (I'm fond of yellow), and don't foul up as bad in thick weeds. Topwaters are the most exciting by far. Fly fishing is the method I want to try most badly.

The best way is to troll slowly with a long steel leader, large plain hook, and a frozen Cisco or Smelt hooked through the bottom side of the head, out through the top.

You can also use a Cisco or Smelt hooked the same way with a sinker and large bobber.

A frozen Cisco or Smelt will get you more Pike than any other method.

Keep in mind that any Smelt or Cisco must have a VHS free verification tag from the dealer or shop where purchased.

This is like saying leaches will always catch the most walleye. wink

BTW, pike love leaches, and they are my bait of choice when walleye fishing for that reason.

th64 - Those are Slabasaurus' pics, but they they are awesome. I know he likes his yak a lot for fishing. It's definitely faster than my 11'4" canoe. But, I paid a lot less grin

I use to love those spinner baits. You can really work them to keep the weeds off and early season they are deadly.

If you asked my dad he'd say use a bobber the size of the Pequot Lakes water tower and a large sucker minnow.

For me I'd say trolling spinnerbaits, or pitching bass jigs to deep weedlines. I've lost a lot jigs to pike bass fishin.

Favorite would be pitching a gumball jig/grub tail; nothing beats the feel of a fish picking up a jig. This method doesn't always produce the most fish but sure is fun when it's working.

Most productive method is probably slow rolling a spinner bait through cabbage and pencil reeds in May and early June.
