ford ecoboost opinions

Recommended Posts

I have no experience with the 5.0 or the ecoboost. I will say I commute 70 miles 1 way and see a lot of trucks. Can't believe how many ecos I see pulling skid loaders! My buddy has one and also his dad they get great mpg is the summer. I have driven my buddy's 2009 and it is a great truck he has the 5.4 though cant imagine how great the new ones are. I was leaning towards the 5.0 for my future but know Idk... pretty awesome rigs!

I bought a new Ford in August and went with the 5.0. I don't pull much more than a couple wheelers and even the salesman told me it wouldn't be worth it if I wasn't going to be doing much pulling. I had a GMC previously with the 5.3 and the power difference is very noticeable. I have the 6.5 box and got the ELD. The couple times I could have used it I forgot about it so I'm not sure how well that works yet. I've never been a Ford person. I went with Ford because of the backseat size and also the option for the bigger box and so far I'm very happy with my decision. I think right now I'm at around 14 or so for mileage but that's mostly with the wife driving it in town. I also had an autostart in it and haven't gotten around to turning the timer down from the max setting. I can't seem to get her to understand that its only going to get so warm idling in -15 and letting it idle for a half hour is just burning gas.

I have the ELD. I like it for when you would actually need a locker. Outside of that, its unneccesary. It unlocks over 5mph I believe, so you can leave it on all the time, but I notice the tires chatter around turns when its engaged.

I tried using it for a day to help with starts at intersections on all this packed ice on the roadways and it really helped, but its not really good for everyday use. It does help my stay out of 4wd though.

4wd is fine without the ELD, like nearly every other vehicle on the market that doesn't have a locker. With the locker and 4wd, it just gives tat added boost of traction when 4wd just isn't cutting it.

The 2015 F150's will have a 2.7 EcoBoost, that will get about the same power, and torque, but they are saying 20% increase in fuel economy. I see they are planning on using the start stop system in them. We will see how that goes over in the cold, and hot climates, where ac, or heat is needed. The 2015 F150 will also have an all aluminum body, that will shave a quite a bit of weight off. Ford just may make the the high set bar for fuel economy standards that were set.
