Locked keys in truck :( - spare key??

BLACKJACK

Question

Was on a fishing trip this weekend and locked my keys into the truck frown After a lot of teeth knashing and cussing I was able to reach in thru the rear sliding glass window on my cab and with a fishing pole retrieve the keys. Could have been a real poor start to the trip. The question I have for you guys is:

1) Years ago you could make a spare key for a couple of bucks and slap it under the car in a magnetic holder, nowadays the keys are $50-100 because of the 'intelligence' built in, can you get a cheap key nowadays?

2) How would you attach it to the vehicle now that everything is plastic?

For those of you using any type of key-less entry or fobs, they can cause some unintended problems that are often overlooked. Using them all the time and never using a key to unlock a door is a seized up lock cylinder waiting to happen. Its a good idea to lubricate the locks once in a while so they work when needed, or that spare hidden key is no good anyway.

Macgyver, when I use my key to open the door of my 2013 Silverado the horn starts beeping!! Is it supposed to do that? It won't shut off until I start the truck or use the fob 'alarm' button to turn it off. Its almost like an anti-theft alarm.

Are you locking the doors with the fob, the door button or the key?

If I am not mistaken if you lock with the fob it will honk, but if you use the key or the door button it wont. About the only advice I can give is to try it each way and see if there is a difference. Let us know....

I maybe wasnt clear on what I meant. Your owners manual might say for sure, but I "think" if you lock it with the fob, then unlock with the key it will honk.

If you lock it with the door lock button or the key, then unlock with the key it should not honk.

I'm a bit embarrassed to say I really don't know for sure. I always use the door button out of habit, but my Avalanche isn't that new!

So you are comparing the likelihood of your battery going dead to that of a meteor strike? Interesting !crazy

No, I was trying to show how preposterous the luddite excuse of fear of the unknown technology is. Their excuse was, something might go wrong so I better not use it.

That can apply to everything. I took it to the extreme. Maybe this allegory would be better understood. The remote on my iPilot broke on a trip last year. The iPilot is a waste of money. Use oars instead. crazy

The best way to teach yourself to not lock the keys in your truck is simple. Never ever use the door lock switch on the door. Even if your sure your keys are already in your pocket always use the remote. Its just a natural habit for me to never shut the door of my truck till the keys are in my hand and ready to push the lock button. Its been at least 15 years since I locked keys in my truck it just wont happen if you only lock your keys with the remote. My wife had a problem after I told her to quit using the lock button on the door the problem was fixed.

Why would that happen? 14 years of using the key pad to get the keys that were locked in my truck.

It's the same argument as, might get hit by a meteor tomorrow too so why bother going to work today. crazy

Believe me, it happens. I don't have the keypad, but there have been times when I'd hit my remote... nothing. Huh, battery in the remote must be dead. Use the key to get in, try to start it, nope, everything is dead, all the way dead. Any my truck has the smarts to turn off lights too, but batteries do die, and die completely on occasion. Even freeze solid.

I hear you. I never use the door lock switch either, in 15 years and two trucks with them, I've never locked my keys in the truck, I'm pretty sure it was my partner but - thats water over the dam. I just know it was a bad feeling and I'm going to try and avoid it in the future by having a spare key. I might even get another one for my tackle box, like someone else suggested.

On my 2011 ford truck I can not lock the doors if my key is in the ignition. If I try too the computer just unlocks the doors. To lock the keys in I would have to remove them from the ignition and lay them down some where in the truck.

Down here in Mizzzery we share trucks so they don't get locked. Just take one thats runnin' and bring it back the next day! crazy Evens out in the end!

If need be a magnetic key box under the bed railing (you know where the put the stock racks stakes) usually works if no shell or such covering on the bed.

After all else fails, might want to look into AAA. laugh

You are right - it is an anti-theft alarm. The alarm arms when you use either the remote or the electric door button. The only way to disarm is with the remote, or by turning the ignition on.
