Locked keys in truck :( - spare key??

Question

Was on a fishing trip this weekend and locked my keys into the truck frown After a lot of teeth knashing and cussing I was able to reach in thru the rear sliding glass window on my cab and with a fishing pole retrieve the keys. Could have been a real poor start to the trip. The question I have for you guys is:

1) Years ago you could make a spare key for a couple of bucks and slap it under the car in a magnetic holder, nowadays the keys are $50-100 because of the 'intelligence' built in, can you get a cheap key nowadays?

2) How would you attach it to the vehicle now that everything is plastic?

Yes you can get a unchiped key,Try the hardware Hank in Willmar maybe its ACE.I had them make 2 unchiped keys one for my wallet one for the wifes purse.We also on the bay bought 2 chipped keys 1/2 price of dealers.One of those is in the cars trunk in a magnetic box.DONT Take the key to be cut to any box store!! they wasted 2 of my keys.The fellow at Ace explained what they dont know!!

I had something similar happen when my Grandpa locked his keys in the trunk at the cabin,only set & 300+ miles from home.Now this was close to 50 yrs ago but we got thru it by taking the back seat out & crawling thru to get them.My brother just got a new Escape last year & he bought($30-$35) a couple of "smart" off the internet for spares.He had to take them to a locksmith in a nearby town to get them cut as they are milled now.The guy couldn't even program them so they would work in the ignition,he said Ford was notorious for this,but they did work in his door.As for where on your vehicle,mine is in the slot on the back of the door for the gas.Do you have a hitch that would be metal & hooked to the frame.Maybe with a cable tie.

This is my second Ford with the keypad on the door to let me in, remote access. Half the time I lock my keys in the truck on purpose now. Don't know what I would do without that option.

I always lock the keys in the truck (out of sight) at the landing. I figure they are safer in the truck than out in the boat.

I keep a spare door key in a magnetic holder just inside my truck bed under the top of the box... Same story here, a chipped key is like $100. A door key is like $2. It won't turn in your ignition, but it'll open doors, and that's all you need if you're worried about locking your keys in your truck.

duct tape one behind the rear license plate. If you have a dime or a means to unscrew the plate you can access the truck, somehow you'll figure it out. I used to do this 15-20 years ago. One pheasant hunting trip a poster who was driving my truck every field locked the doors three times in one day with the keys in it.

I as well Kyhl.....in the center console & double check to make sure all doors are locked behind me, ive got electric keypad on door and its all I need to get in, better than losing keys in snow, water, or boat.

As long as the battery doesn't go dead for some reason..... wink

I have a door key stashed under my truck in a magnetic box . A few weeks ago I needed to use it and it wouldn't turn in the lock until I sprayed wd40 in the lock. I suggest stashing wd40 along with the spare key

A key that will only open the door in a magnetic holder zip tied under the front of the truck and a key that starts the vehicle hidden inside. Coat the key under the truck with some vaseline so it doesn't corrode. Only issue then is having something to cut the zip tie with.

I keep a key zip tied up under the truck. I end up replacing the zip ties about once a year, and not by choice crazy

When OnStar was still active on the truck I used it a couple of times. The last time was before I had a smartphone. Being the genius I am I locked myself out of the house and truck at the same time, so I had to try to remember the OnStar number. I must have been off on a couple of numbers because the answer I got was definitely NOT OnStar. It was a fella with a latin accent who wanted to do more than just talk. Think Kenny Rogers but with a male on both ends of the line.... I zip tied my spare key to the bottom of my truck that afternoon but the voice I heard on the phone and the things he said to me still give me nightmares.

Why would that happen? 14 years of using the key pad to get the keys that were locked in my truck.

It's the same argument as, might get hit by a meteor tomorrow too so why bother going to work today. crazy

I keep a key in the cab of the truck, always!! Main keys and fob never leave my pocket. I've spent $$ on dumber things than a key

Good idea, I may give it a try. I have been carrying two sets of keys on me at all times for over 25 years and this has saved me more than a few times. I still have one taped to some wiring under the truck, I only had to use this once.

Glad to hear that I'm not the only one to lock my keys into the truck!!!

Next time I trade trucks that keyless entry may move higher up the priority list!!!

In the meantime I did stop by the local Hardware Hank and got a spare key made and a magnetic holder, need to find a spot tonight to slap it on.

You can program a chipped key yourself, at least with a 2006 F150.

After locking my keys in the truck 5 minutes before leaving deer camp and then having to break the extended cab window to get in - I purchased a chipped blank off the internet. A little searching will reveal the steps to program your own key.

So, for about $20, I had a spare that would start my truck in the console and a dumb key hidden on the outside of the vehicle.

Classic thing is the light in the trunk or under the hood stays on. I had a for aerostar and had it happen twice while on canoe trips. Came back after a week and it was totally dead. Had to jump it for like 20 minutes to get it to even crank.

Vehicles are smarter now. It is often that the door to my truck doesn't close all the way, in the garage. The truck is smart enough to turn off the doom light after some amount of time. I don't worry about it and have never had a battery issue because of the doom light.

Maybe I'm just lucky.
