Dog dreams?

Stick in Mud

Recommended Posts

I've had an Irish setter, a beagle, and a pit bull. None seemed to dream much, apart from--at most--very minor whimpers with a few paw twitches.

The new pooch--yellow lab--falls asleep and runs marathons, barks, whimpers, raises his head, growls, and/or sniffs, all while dead asleep.

It's funny, but I'm just curious if I've got a wacky dog, if it's labs, or if he's finding the glue we hide in the bottom drawer.

We have two golden retreivers that bark in their sleep on occasion. The barks are softer than the barks when they are awake. I've always assumed they were just barking in their dreams.

Think it's more of a genetic thing in labs. Can't speak for other breeds. When we have a litter, the first thing they do when born is latch on for a snack. Then it's off to sleep and almost always they start having puppy dreams complete with leg twitches and little peeps/squeaks. Can't imagine that 10 minutes or less of breathing has given them a lot of data to dream on. Fun to watch and wonder on though.

We've had 4 generations of mother/daughter with us for going on 20 years now. It's funny how when one starts dreaming, you can count on the other one starting within a few seconds.

Both of my yellow labs do the running, cry, growl, bark, shake, and one even lays with his tongue out about 2 inches. Last night the older lab let out a bark that brought the younger one straight up out of sleep. Older one snores so loud he wakes me up at night and i have to tell him to be quiet.

The older one does drive byes on us and or scares himself when passing gas, especially when he is asleep.

Both my black and yellow labs dream. The black lab whines and growls and yips and occasionally runs.

My yellow one runs almost nightly and yips occasionally. About once a month, he'll sit straight up and howl for about 3-4 seconds and go back to sleep-- funny thing is, he has never howled when he is awake. Gotta wonder what he's dreaming about when he does that.

It is definitely in other breeds too. We see it in our dogs every once in a while. And we have seen it in puppies as young as 4 weeks. In fact, as I think about it, I think I may have seen it happen more often in the very young puppies.

Our pointer does all of that too. I start crying cause i am laughing so hard at her. The other night she did a full on run into what it looked like a point cause her tail raised up like when she is on point. It just makes you wonder what they are dreaming about.

Our Black Lab, Bones, is a crazy dreamer. Twitchy, running, growling, whining, then he farts, wakes himself up, sniffs the air, and flops back down like he's won the contest. cool

He's the funniest dog I've ever known. He's even won over my wife, who NEVER would have imagined having a dog live inside her house. She comes home from work, lays down on the sofa for a little siesta, and he just snuggles right up with her and they nap together. Pretty cute. Big 100 lb. lab acting like a pillow for my little 100 lb. wife. smile

So what you're trying to say is: when you enter the room, you get 200 lbs of 'what the heck do you want?". laugh

Good Luck!

Ken
