troutman
-8 this morning and the Nils/Tanaka would not start. After numerous attempts I was certain it must now be flooded. However, when I pulled the plug,it did not appear to be.Re installed the plug, choked, primed even more, squeezed the throttle a few time and it finally started.Rather than ask a bunch of ?'s,I'll narrow it down to just one.How about some cold weather starting tips for the Nils/Tanaka? hoggs222
Not sure if this would help or not. What about starting it at home first and get it up to temp. Maybe it would start better at the lake.
20lbSloughShark
#1 new spark plug. Even if it looks good, they're like $2#2 if its flooded, choke off, full throttle and pull fast#3 take the plug out, and pour like a table spoon of gas in#4 starting fluidif it wont start with starting fluid, its broke
live4chrome
Another vote for the starting fluid. After a few dozen pulls the can comes out and she should fire right up

Surface Tension
Brake the vacuum in the gas tank by loosening the gas cap. The button is to purge air from the gas lines. It isn't a primer so don't worry about flooding. Full choke. If after 6 pulls and no fire, hold the throttle lever down and pull. Still no fire, turn the switch from Off to On Adjusting The Mixture Page 26. You all the Walbro WYJ carb. First you have to remove the plastic plug on top the mixture screw. You will know its location from viewing the link. Use a small nail. Heat up the tip of the nail just enough to melt through the plastic cap but not hot enough to melt the plastic any further. Insert the nail with a small amount of pressure. There is space between the cap and needle screw, when you feel the nail melt through the cap and come in slight contact with the head of the mixture screw stop and let the nail cool and harden the plastic cap to the nail. Carefully pull the nail out with cap. You'll need a small screwdriver to make the adjustment. Use a marker on the shaft of the screwdriver for you to use a reference. Even a very small adjustment is going to change the performance of this engine and that includes low speed, mid range, and high speed. In the pdf I've linked you to the proper procedure is noted to adjust the carb. Specifically what you want to do is richen the mixture. You can try this first. Turn the mixture screw out(counter clockwise) 1/4. You might be good right there. Note that when you richen this mixture your idle speed will drop so you may have to adjust the idle speed via the idle stop screw. Be careful because if you get impatient you stand a good chance of getting too far off. In that case refer back to the link and follow it exactly as it states. Remember that your not looking for the highest RPM during this process and the 1/4 counterclockwise after hitting highest idle will richen the mixture and drop those RPMs.
hamms-scooter
I feel my rpms could be higher sometimes but wonder if this is due to the main jet being smaller. I am happy with the powerhead anyway. For OP the best thing you can try is the throttle hold while pull starting. They need to have these main jets replaced to larger size for us using them in cold temps. Darn EPA. I plan to have this done with some assistance. That was the only time I had a problem starting it. LOL It has been a great starter even in the cold.

Wide open throttle while starting... problem solved. Same issue has been brought up before and on other forums; WOT is the fix.
