You will see the "state trail" sign as you approach the parking area,,, its about 8 miles from the turn off where 53 and 169 split,,,, last time I drove by last week the parking area was plowed out so we should be good to go

So 8 miles up 53 or 169 towards Tower? R or L side of road going north?

The lot is just north of Little Sand lake on google maps, on the left hand side of Hwy 53 (google maps show it as road #562).

I will IM you my phone # and you can follow me if we're in 2 vehicles, I will be headed that way tomorrow AM on my way to Orr.

Its an easy lot to find, really.

Thanks Xplorer. It looks like there is a Birch knob fire tower there?

Have not heard back from my Cus so maybe you and I can sled pool up on my trailer. Heading to Two Harbors for a ride tomorrow. wink

Five of us hit the Taconite trail above Virginia to Ely. Put on about 130 miles. Weather was great, trails weren't to bad other then later in the day when they got a little more icy in the corners. Stopped at Bench Warmers in Tower for a pop and the Boathouse in Ely for lunch of course! All was going well until Leech broke ranks and decided to take a little detour off to do some powder riding in a clear cut, then while the group was waiting for the goof to show up. Tom decided to take a little detour and do some powder riding in a swamp, and he almost made it! grin

Xplorer had to fire up the long track and make some loops to help out and almost lost it as well. The ever helpful ripstick headed out into the swamp and got swamped up to the knee and filled a boot! frown

Tom did get out on the loops Xplorer made and a lot of sweat, ripstick drained his boot at Bench Warmers and got a plastic bag to line his boot so all worked out. They can all blame me for going off on an impromptu adventure! whistle

All in all a very nice ride and it was nice meeting Chris and Tom for the first time, and always good to see Randy & Gary. Long day for me, left home at 3:30am in the cities and got back at 11:00pm but it was fun oorha! wink

P.S Tom my gear still smells like "Klotz" thanks. laugh

leech,

I had a great time and it was a nice way to most likely end the season for me!! I'm gonna bring some cheese along next time instead of veni sticks for Tom for all the whinning he did about the pace winkgrin

Trails were good and the company was better!!! I think a ride next year to the west from there should be a plan!!!

You guys have a great end to the season as I set my sights on warmer climes smilegrin

See you out on the big Gitch in the near future!!

Thanks Guys,

It was great to join such a fun group of guys for what has been my longest trail ride to date. I do what I can to keep the ride interesting!! grin

You had the chance to leave me stranded in the deep snow of the swamp to fend for myself but you did not, for that I'm thankful. If someone got their foot and leg soaked to the knee I'll see what I can do to feel bad about that. cry Na I'm over it grin

Nice meeting you as well leech. Thanks again guys for the fun day. I look forward to our next outing.

Well, our leader Gary was on a mission and was missing way to many nice powder areas so I just couldn't help myself! I have been looking at to many MN Mike Cooke city posts I think! grin

No doo mac, just an edge tour. I don't understand why 40 was fast. Wet foot was from thinking on walking out and helping tom out. I will remember that at least till I am done here . All in all it was a good time. Next year. we got to run the west side of 53 for sure.

Who said we were going to fast? I think the pace was just about right Gary. I will say that sitting in the back like I like to do, you can hit some 60mph catch up speeds sometimes! grin

But, the Tac is a windy trail which I like and does keep the speed down a bit. wink

If you have a hitch on your back rack can you take some pictures and post or PM?

Thx

MR

Here you go. It's a Cat Mfg one made for the sled on the bumper not on the rack which I took off for the last few rides, but it may fit others?
