rcook72
what have you guys heard. I was looking at the Jiffy propane which looked and felt like a nice solid machine. Then I picked up the Jiffy lite and like the weight but it felt a lot cheaper. I kind of had my mind set on propane but then picked up the Strike Master Lite with Honda 4 stroke. What are your thoughts? Guess I am leaning Strike Master because the smaller Jiffy just didn't feel right to me.
Capt. H (Ret.)
Doesn't make any difference to me which one you chose but I am curious as to why the Jiffy "didn't feel right"??? If the Strike Master suits your needs and "feels right" then that's the one to go with.
rcook72
Guess "didn't feel right" was the correct term. I really like the pro 4 pull cord and construction. It felt and looked solid. I didn't realize they had the light model because I wasn't in the market for a new auger until this week. The Pro 4 lite model if I can remember correctly was a little more plastic and the small pull cord handle, the throttle cable was really sloppy.I didn't realize that weight would mean that much to me but after turning 40 I realized I am turning into a puss.Guess I was looking more at ergonomics now. With the eskimo that I had the choke was on top across from the pull cord and as I pulled the my sleeve would "un-choke" the engine because of the location. Was such a pain. Now that you asked the question I have to go back and look the models over again.Do you have the Jiffy propane? I don't have a wheel house so exaust isn't a huge issue for me. I have flooded my old auger now and then that's why I was thinking propane. After thinking propane I saw the two lite models and that changed my mind a little. So I was just wonder if anyone had any pro's / con's over the two lite models. I am sure I would be happy with either. I just better go back and look at them again and see which one would suits me better.
castmaster
IMHO one can NEVER go wrong with a Honda!
dirt292lv
I am also looking a a new auger. I too felt the jiffy light was made a little cheaper and the strike master honda is just to pricey, I am going with the jiffy pro 4, difference of ten pounds i feel that it will last me the longest is worth the extra weight. Capt. H (Ret.)
I have an old Jiffy Lightning Legend with an 8 inch Blade. It's a smoker and I have used it both in a house and outside. It gets a little foggy in the house by the time I drill 6-8 holes but I just open a window and leave the door open until it airs out a little. I've looked at several different makes of drills and I think they will all work good most of the time. I take care of my equipment and even then sometimes there is a problem. The jury is still out for me on the propane drills. They've been out several years and I think they have worked most of the bugs out of them. I carry an extra bottle for my lantern so there really is no reason not to have an extra for a propane auger. I just haven't had the need yet to upgrade, YET.Do your homework and pull the trigger on the one you want!!Mike
adamr
I bought the jiffy lite last week and used it started after 3 pulls brand new 1 pull there after. Cuts awesome maybe two good because the auger bound twice in the ice the motor could be a liitle more hp. The kill switch is very nicely located. The bigger jiffy propane might be the way I had one last year and it cut great I just hated always having to lay it a certain way.
mww24
just got my 8" hondalite yesterday. started right up. purred like a kitten. seems constructed amazingly. it is quieter at full throttle than my 2 stroke was at idle. havent drilled yet. but so far im glad i ponied up and bought it. cant comment on jiffy. have never used or even held one. just my first impressions on the strikemaster. i think i will be happy even if it cuts a bit slower than a bigger h.p. 2 stroke
Fowlmouth
Both are great, close your eyes and pick one.

Vitreus
I really like the idea of the propane. My next auger will be exhaust free one way or another.

dirtymike
Well the "lite" is only correctly describing one (SM). The propane jiffy is heavy. If you drill a lot of holes, you'll enjoy shedding the extra pounds. I do suggest a side by side comparison. My SM lite has been awesome. I bought one last year and have thoroughly enjoyed using it. rcook72
I do drill a ton of holes when I fish. Headed to Cabela's tomorrow to do final comparison. Thanks for all the input. Great place to see how people like their gear.
ski_otter
If you drill a lot of holes it would be difficult to pick anything but the SM of these two.Jiffys are great, reliable, but the weight...
rcook72
Pulled the trigger on the SM today. I feel good about the choice. Talked to a few of the Sales guys. I am sure they are both great units. Now to hit the ice. Thanks for the input fellas.
