2013 Ford F150 questions

Recommended Posts

I'm new to Fords having bought my first one in August. My previous/other pickup is a 2003 GMC Sierra and I've only ever owned GM products so I'm new to some of the functions.

First, is there any way to turn off the interior lights? I haul kids around and quite often have them fall asleep in the back seat on the way home from Grandmas and it would make life much easier if the lights didn't come on when I open the doors to get them out.

I finally figured out that I can turn on my cargo light to light up the box by holding the switch for the dash lights. Is there any other way?

This is my first brand new pickup. I normally change my own oil and use Mobil 1. Can I change my own oil still on this pickup or am I required to have it changed somewhere?

Upon searching apparently the answer for the front dome light is said to be no way, except.....

There is reportedly a "police/dark mode" that disables it permanently. It is done by the dealer .. They have to flash something and set " BCM police dark car" or so it is said.

Maybe a switch in the wire or pull the bulb would be easier?

Most fords have a dimmer switch for the interior lights (dash, cluster, and dome). turn that down before you open door, or up to turn on the cargo light.

Honda had a dealer software flash that could change the default settings.. I bet if you swing by ford they could help you out in more detail than I can.

Have you read the "owners manual"??? It usuually has some pretty good direction in it.

If only I had thought of that. Its a wonder that I even got my shoes tied this morning.

I've been through the manual numerous times and couldn't find anything which is why I asked the question here. That is where I found the info to get the cargo light on. I have heard about people going to the dealership to have certain things turned off such as the seat belt alarm but was hoping for something simple that I was missing in the manual.

I was hoping I could do my own oil. I didn't want to have to pay an arm and a leg to have synthetic put into it. Thanks for the info.

Does it have the optional rear dome lights? Are those the ones your trying to turn off or do you want the fronts to turn off.

If you have the optional rear dome light what happens when you turn the switch on? Do the cargo lights come on as well?

Will they come on when you press the unlock button on the fob with the keys in the ignition and the engine running?

Or maybe the better question is when do you want them to come on?

Fine, You twisted my arm, I fired up Vista on my mac and got you this:

Dark Car Feature

The dark car configuration disables the activation of the illuminated entry and illuminated exit features when active. The courtesy lamps can still be activated by the instrument panel dimmer switch.

This is a programmable function that any dealership will be able to help you with for.

BTW the dealership uses a semi-synthetic oil standard, unless you request a full synthetic.

Thank you John and others. You are a wizard of the internet search. I tried all things when searching and couldn't find anything. You made my life easier and will help keep my kids sleeping. I will swing by the dealership the next chance I get. Thanks again!

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
