Grass Length

How long or short should a guy keep his yard for the winter. A few years ago I kept it pretty long and had a lot of snow mold. Last year I ran it short but took a long time to grow(which could easily been because of our spring!). I guess what is the rule of thumb?

Through the hot summer months (July and August) I am cutting at the highest setting on the mower. This provides the best drought tolerance cutting i.e. less times cutting and depth of grass provides its own shade.

By this time of year I am at the lowest setting on the mower. This allows my leaves to be blown by the wind, off my grass into the neighbors yard, keeps the snow mold to a minimum, and the vole activity to a minimum. It also allows for a quicker spring green up since the new grass shoots will more quickly over grow the dormant stems.

I alwsy keep mine about the same height as my summer cuttings. I do not get concerned about the leaves left as I bag everything the last mowing to get rid of them.

I saw this and googled it and many said approx 2.5 inches before the snow. NUmerous site's said it is better for the health of the lawn and it helps control snow mold.

Least that is what I read.
