Pins and Cans

With the split season on Pintails and Canvasback I was just wondering how many people actually got a shot at some Pintails? It has been years since I have shot either one. But I did get a canvasback in Carver County about 4-5 years ago.

I hunt the Itasca County area and we saw alot of pins last year. Just about every time out during the pin season, we would have one if not 2 in our 2 person bag limit. We saw some awesome fully colored pin drakes after the pin season closed....dang it! This year we haven't seen nearly as many pins, maybe more water for them to hide in? We haven't done any bigwater hunting, but are rigged up for it this year. My buddy and I are both hoping for a big bull can for the wall. Is that too much to ask?

This is acctually the first year I have seen pins around here let alone getting some. My hunting partner and I have got 4 so far this year. I've never shot a pin, I can only remember seeing a couple in the last umpteen years around here before it. Was kind of a nice bonus.

We see and shoot lots of pins every year in NW MN. The population is pretty good up there. You most certainly have to be able to ID birds! Good luck!

F.Y.I. Just so nobody messes up.

The daily bag limit is six ducks, and may not include more than four mallards (only two of which may be females), three scaup, two wood ducks, two redheads, and one black duck. The daily limit will also include one pintail and one canvasback during the 30-day open seasons for those species. One pintail per day may be taken from Saturday, Sept. 25 through Sunday, Oct. 24. One canvasback per day may be taken from Saturday, Oct. 9 through Sunday, Nov. 7. Possession limits are twice the daily bag limits.

Paceman shot a pintail hen up near DL when I was huting with him a couple of weeks ago. I've shot several in ND other years, haven't gone for a few now.

I have only seen a very limited number of pins in my day. 2 years ago we were hunting this area around central mn when a few pins were using a large pond. Managed to get myself one. Since then I have yet to see one. Still searching the skys for that first canvasback.

We normally see quite a few pintails out in ND over the season, but they aren't easy to come by... I've only shot one in MN... The drakes sure are nice looking birds..
