Does anyone else find it very tempting to cook up some Amanita Muscaria?? It sounds like there is a pretty simple process to remove the toxins that cause you to "trip" and you are left with a very tasty mushroom. I'm not encouraging anyone to do this, but sometimes the woods are so full of the things that a guy can't help but think about it....

You're, like, too constrained by, like, reality, man.

If, like, they were good enough for Moses, dude, they should be good enough for you.

Man, I really need to get back to reading more of that book. I have never heard the Moses eating magic shroom part in the book? wink But, I guess if I was selling another book that says that. It would be true for sure! whistle

I haven't given it much thought, honestly. I've read in numerous places that it's safe with proper cooking techniques, but I've never been tempted to risk it.

Here's the wiki page, though you can find similar theories in more scholarly sources: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manna

And for what it's worth (not much), my Catholic upbringing did not bring me into close contact with much rabbinical literature, but I dearly wish it would have after reading sentences like this (from the above wiki page): "As a natural food substance, manna would produce waste products; but in classical rabbinical literature, as a supernatural substance, it was held that manna produced no waste, resulting in no defecation among the Israelites until several decades later, when the manna had ceased to fall." ....Now that's what I call full of s***.

Well I think the book call things like that miracles. So, back to the topic. Mushrooming! wink

Here's a cool video from the Mikeology Store of all the mushrooms he photographed over the last season. I think it's pretty cool to see how many I can identify (not many)...and some of them are just plain wild.

I think most of the ones that were presented in this thread are on here. Unfortunately, the video doesn't identify them. frown

My girlfriend (the same one who wouldn't touch a mushroom 4 years ago) came home with a bag of dried chanterelles last night from the grocery store. It kind of twerked me off (still don't know what twerk is but it sounds right in this context) that she ate all of mine while I was hunting last fall and now I have to eat expensive dried ones that I didn't pick. Told her that next year she is coming with so that we don't run out by January. I just don't have time to pick enough by myself. Hope we have a bumper crop this summer to make it easier! Is it too early to start praying for a few nice rains in July?

Ha, you know what the girls say. If you can't do it for me, I'll do it myself! grin

LOL. I've never met you, NoWiser, but you don't seem like the kind of guy who twerks.

I'd post a video, but one earlier attempt got nixed by the Head Honcho. smile

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
