Hey….. was originally just stirring the maple syrup thread pot, and happened to notice how many hits this thread got over the last few months smile Am terrible at multitasking as well, but going to give the trout/morel thing a go in Northeast Iowa this year, and it can't come soon enough…..man it is friggin cold out this morning.

I can't believe you guys are stirring this thread up already....I thought I was safe for a while yet...Now I had to go back through them all and get all antsy again... grin

I think there is some cabin fever in the air. The other thing is that this forum is so relaxed compared to the others. The mushroom regulars on this forum are very friendly and helpful. No arguments over Vexilar vs. MarCum or other silliness.

Someone should start a new thread: "Chicken v. Hen: Which is better and why?" grin

Speak for yourself. A guy makes one post of a mushroom with his favorite beverage next to it for a size comparison, and he gets relentlessly ridiculed from that point on cry

Seriously, though, I think you are on to something there. This is probably my favorite forum to visit for that reason. I love how when people post pictures of their finds, it seems to motivate everyone to get off their rear ends and hit the woods, resulting in more pictures and more motivation.

FYI, everyone knows hens are better.... laugh

You mean this photo.... sick As for the hen vs. chicken debate-If I find a nice oozy fresh bulbous chicken, it's every bit as good as any hen... wink But that's rare and hens are better 9 out of ten times...

I just can't believe some of you guys get away with just loading your shrooms on the kitchen counter.

Next time you do that. Say, Honey come look at the great "Fungus" I brought home! shocked

And see if you get to put it there again! laugh

Stick is right, the great debate was oysters vs chickens. It got ugly…..he even threw Dietz Van Dam under a British double decker bus for liking both oysters and bass fishing. Mid Lake Rock is wrong; the regulars in this forum just use a lot of emoticons to to mask the fervor…….last year alone ….Nowiser had to start drinking hipster beer with skinny jeans on, Jerky called Matt a "fairy", Matt and Stick argue about semantics of taxonomy classifications…..post at your own risk fellas!!! It won't be long before you'll start to see the various mushroom pro staff with all their matching spandex shirts and shorts, carrying designer mesh field bags and eyewear, with each telling you how their sponsored bug spray is the best……...

Hey, ever sport has to have a uniform! Lay off the spandex! And I use one of my wifes delicate mash laundry bags that work just fine, thank you! cool

I called my doctor this morning and got some interesting news. Apparently I can drink Busch Light because there's technically not any beer in it. smile

That right there had me busting out laughing. I've spent the last 24 hours trying to come up with a witty rebuttal, but I've got nothing. That was perfect.

Regarding getting in trouble for shrooms on the counter... When I first started dating her she wouldn't touch a mushroom with a 10' pole. Now I spend all summer foraging and vacuum sealing. I leave for a hunting trip in the fall and when I get home she has half of my chanterelle stash eaten. Trust me, I don't get any complaining, just a quick warning to "make sure you kill the ants when you are done."

Stick in Mud....Up by one. smile

Speaking of disappearing mushroom stashes, my Significant Other does the exact same thing. Came home from a fishing trip to Upper Red, and my hen stash was almost completely gone. I was actually a bit grumpy about it. She blamed it on the dog, but he's pretty particular these days. Last time I fed him some oysters, he spent the next few minutes licking his butt, trying to get the taste out of his mouth.

Now he won't touch a mushroom.

Seems like a lot of animals will not eat shrooms or there wouldn't be any left in the woods. I wonder what they are trying to tell us? confused They taste like "Butt" grin

I've seen quite a few mushrooms with nibbles out of them--even some of the poisonous ones. Why more animals don't eat more mushrooms, I don't know.

Of course, if an animal DOES eat a mushroom, how are we going to know? Maybe there would be a whole lot more mushrooms out there if the fauna weren't eating them all. smile

The ones I find with little holes in them are later in the season and seem to have some bugs in them. I think they are making the holes not Deer or Rabbits? One of my spots they grow right in and along a pretty good Deer trail and I have seen the Deer step on them on the trail, but they don't seem to be eating them. confused

That's funny. I'll be eating some amanita muscaria raw as soon as I reach the "Master Soma shaman" level. And whilst it might be the most boring youtube video I've ever seen, it does seem that this fella has eaten a few too many mushrooms in his day.

Its all really real Leech. Just drink some reindeer urine after they eat all that muscaria and see what happens. Similarly, eat a big ole toadstool and as many as assumably the dude above has, and do suspect you will end up looking and talking like him after awhile smile

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
