buying F 150

any opinions or help you guys could give on the 6 cyl ecooboost versus the 5.0 8cylother than 2 mpg.

also how much difference between 3.55 gears and 3.73 is there or what is one used for over the other.

I would be using it for pulling a 16ft aluminum boat of average weight. a12 foot coverd snowmobile trailer, and sometimes a utility trailer with a couple thousand pounds on it.

All opinions and help appreciated

Thanks

Thanks guys I do plan on driving both. I had the ecoboost over the weekend and will try the eight for a day or two this week.

Airjer what are your thoughts on the turbo chargers on the eco, are there any known problems with them and if they go bad is it a expensive repair.

I did like the ecoboost but I think it would need a little exhaust work. Its just a little to quiet. LOL

Thanks again.

I'm sure you have your mind set on the ford but if you go with the v-8 test drive the tundra before you buy the ford. The 5.7 has a bunch more horse, it pulls very well (notice there where no tundras on the ecoboost challenge commercials) and they stop on a dime.

I have only heard of one problem with a turbo that covered under the warranty. I think that one took out the engine as well. JOHNBIGDOG can fill you in more on that.

The fuel economy is the big attraction with the ecoboost. In my case an extra 5mpg is awful appealing.

I traded my 2012 Tundra(with the 5.7) For a 2013 F150 with ecoboost. The ecoboost tows a bit better IMO. It also has more torgue down low where it counts. Gas mileage is much better too.

The turbo that failed was on a SHO.

On the f150's the only "turbo" related problems are some few oil leaks from the turbo drain tube. I have noticed that their is a little vibration on acceleration from a stop that certain models seem to have. newer ones do have a slightly different C.A.C. (charge air cooler) set up to prevent condensation. done a few of these, quite a bit of water has come out. Have had some complaints on a few trucks of intermittent loss of throttle control, have not been able to verify complaints, as there have been no DTCs set to chase.

The highest mileage ecoboost I have seen is a 2011 with 80 k on it. It pulls strong, had to replace one coil on it. (slight misfire on medium acceleration) has some other problems but it was in some sort of front end collision.

One has to remember that the turbos on these ecoboosts are liquid and oil cooled; They (F150s) take 5-30 not 5-20 and would recommend changing the oil, coolant at the specified intervals.

Our dealership has sold tons of these trucks, and for what we have sold VS the bad above, the bad is very small. On a side note, please realize that when ford boasts the fuel economy of the eco, they were most likely using a 2wd version with gearing more meant for highway. I have been seeing some ecos as low as 13 MPG, but then comes to question the customers driving habits too.

I have a 2012 F150 Ecoboost with 6500 miles. Mine is a crewcab with 6.5' box, maxtow package and the 3.73's. I average 14.3 mpg for daily city driving and get 17-19mpg highway depending on my speed.

I towed my 4500lb camper two weeks ago and got 11.8 mpg.

All of these are improvements over my 2005 F350 with 6.0L diesel that I traded in and mileage should continue to improve as the mileage gets a bit higher. Heck, I've only had one oil change so far.

Thanks all, and yes Airjer I will look into the Tundra, take it for a ride that is.

Any opinions/ advice/ help on choice of gearing. 3.55 VS 3.73. That is something I am not an expert on by no means. I don't pull or carry heavy a lot. Just your average 16ft alum. boat, a 12ft snowmobile trailer and once in a while a heavy loaded dual axle trailer. (1-2 1/2 ton)

Thanks again

I have a 2011 Eco Boost and my son has a same year 5.0. I have the 373 gears on mine and my son has the 355's on his. I prefer the 373's although on the eco boost it is a bit redundant as it has that torque on the low end. Honestly I find very little difference between the two except I'm probably getting 2 mpg better than the 5.0. Both tow really well and that 5.0 has a lot of grunt for towing especially something as light as you will be pulling. Money wise, I think they about come out even if you hang onto trucks for a while. The extra cash you save with the 5.0 will be mitigated somewhat by the extra mpg's you get on the eco boost.

I have less than 2k on my 2013 super crew with the eco boost. It pulls very well so far. With my 2002 5.4 I would pull my 19ft enclosed snowmobile trailer empty with the overdrive turned off. Last Friday I pulled the trailer with 2 4 wheelers and other equipment at 70mph and it never downshifted out of 6th gear. Driving slower though I lock out 6th gear. So far 11.6 mpg loaded and 12.6 empty. My wife drives the truck for a daily driver so I am not in tune with the regular mpg.

Hi , anyone have the max tow package with the ecoboost, 3.73 rear diff, and heavier springs. I tow a seven thousand pound camper, and I know Ford says they will tow 11,000 pounds, BUT, I would like some input from real people not sales jargon. Anyone? Thanks.

I have the 2011 FX4 with the set up you are talking about. I tow a 4,500 Lb. bass boat and it doesn't even know it's back there. Totally effortless and about 15-16mpg at 65 mph. My son has a 2013 with the 5.0 and the same thing but about 2 mpg less with towing.

I have the 2012 150 ecoboost with maxtow package. I tow a 5000 lb camper behind the truck plus have wife, 2 kids, 2 dogs and all the supplies. The truck doesn't even flinch. Built in brake controller is very responsive, truck handles great and the tow mirrors see everything. I've gotten 9-11 mpg while hauling the camper.
