One more point to the discussion: South Dakota licenses start Jan 1st-Dec. 31st. I guess not even different states can agree as well.

For the record, I really liked having Jan 1 as the date when I lived there. They also had the month of December to get a new one, so it would never expire in the middle of a trip.

Wrong! Better check your point on that mine expired on 01/31/13 this year just like it always has. Sd is a poor example anyways because we don't have a closed season for species.

The license period for this year 12/15/2012 to 01/31/2014

The only thing I disagree with is pick a stupid date, ANY DATE and leave it. I buy a liscense every year, so I could care less what month I buy it in...just leave it the same so I don't forget!
Better yet, make a mobile app, that tells me the expiration date so I dont have to pull my license out and look at it along with the fine print that says "unless noted elsewhere".
