Sid is obnoxious. He needs to retire already. They treat him likes he's frickin' Santa Claus and can do / say no wrong. Everyone just rolls their eyes and says oh that's just Sid being Sid. No it's a @hole being an @hole. Someone needs to call him out on his !#% at one of these pressers.

After 4 or 5 big time coaches passed on our offer, I think we had to look either at an assistant from an established program or a young up and comer as they say. That being said, I like the hiring of Pitino. However, he probably has little or no chance of recruiting any of the big 3 juniors. What he should do is hire an assistant that has experience recruiting Minnesota high school players, someone like Novak from Hopkins or Thoreson from DeLasalle!!!! (Tongue planted firmly in cheek)

As long as we are talking about has-been reports/columnists, lets add Reusse to the please retire list. All he does is take contrary positions so people get mad. It is like the guy at the water cooler who you liked to talk sports with but over time you realize it just isnt fun to talk sports with the know-it-all so you avoid him. I have officially given up on Reusse and do not read any of his pieces.

If anyone is suggesting that we keep Tubby for any reason, you lost me. There was no reason to keep him and he very well could have harmed this program for years to come if he had stayed. Now we dont know how Jr is gonna do.... maybe he will suck....but nothing in life is 100% except death and taxes as they say.

In regard to the $$$, I get the waste issue. From what I could find, it looks like we had Tubby extended through the 2016-2017 Season at the following (roughly)

2013-2014 1.95 million base

2014-2015 2.05 Million base

2015-2016 2.15 million base

2016-2017 2.25 million base

His incentives were MUCH more profitable than the new guys.

With his base salaries that is a total of 8.4 million through 2017.

With the Buyout of 3.3 million and being on the hook for 1.2 per season with the new guy that amounts to 8.1 million through 2017. This does not include bonuses for championships, getting in the tournament, etc. Since folks are wondering about sources, I got the info from an ESPN article that talked about Tubby's extension. So what I gather is IF we would have kept Tubby through 2017 it would have cost us 8.4 million, but buying him out and with the new coaches contract we spend 8.1 million through 2017. I guess I could have the whole thing goofed up, but that is how the math comes out for me.

I think it is very rare in government to allow one to hire a family member and be the direct supervisor of that person. I'm surprised it is allowed with Tubby or anyone involved in a public university. Maybe that was the sticking point, otherwise it's just a couple of egos going at each other.

The hire is as good as we could hope for after Shaka and others turned us down. The experience working for his dad and Donovan are as good as you can get if you want to become a coach. I think the kid from Cooper would be a great fit for the Patino offense.

It's nice to see and AD try something different.

I can't wait to see Mo Walker try and play in this system laugh

This job is much easier than the gophers football job.

I think we saw Tubby's love for MN and the program when he grabbed his sneakers hopped in the car and sped away. He's at his age not in it to build anything, players went to Kentucky because Kentucky is Kentucky, not because the tub was there but they try to sell that to us here in MN that he had a big hand in it all. Tubby is in it for $ only now, at some point with age the recruiting etc. must get old, he's just hanging in there as long as someone is willing to cough up the green. He is not at the age where you'll go above and beyond to get things done. He seemed slightly burned out in a way. Now we'll bring in passion and see where it takes the gophers. PS. Tubby, get those eyebrows cleaned up a little.

I give him 2 years, 3 max, before he's off to greener pastures.

So you, being the realist you claim, must think he's going to take the Gophs to 2-3 consecutive NCAAs, and most likely getting past the first round? I'll take that. Seriously though if he can do that greener pastures aren't going to be as green as here. By that time his recruits will be playing and a deep run in the tourney will be very possible. He won't leave until after that so even if that happens in 2-3 years I'll be very happy with his service.

If he fails to reach the tourney all 2-3 years where's the greener pastures?

He'll do just enough to make himself appealing to other schools and Tubby's recruits will be the reason for not being able to get over. He's been working his way up the ladder and MN is just another rung near the bottom. Plenty of greener pastures out there and with his pedigree (name) he'll be given the benefit of the doubt as long as he keeps his nose clean and does a mediocre job here. I doubt he unpacks half his belongings after he moves to MN.

Sorry but that's opinion not reality. Reality calls for consistency. If he can't win he won't go anywhere greener than a big 10 school. He wins, we're happy, he gets recognition, he moves on. Everybody's happy. He loses he goes nowhere bigger than the Gophs. Last time I checked names get you started not advancement, plenty of examples out there. Sorry to rain in "your" reality parade but you got it wrong.

That is what you said. Mediocre job is not winning. Blaming Tubbys recruits is implying that he's not winning either. What part were you trying to compare?

I know what I said, I typed it.

A "mediocre job" isn't winning? I thought MN fans thrived for mediocre? You know, getting to that magical 6 win plateau to get a bowl game or just winning enough to get into the playoffs, which is as far as Rich will get before riding out of town to a high profile school.

Wow, so you are relating the areas acceptance to mediocrity to any NCAA big time school? You make no sence. How does his mediocre coaching land him at a high profile program? That doesn't happen buddy. He will need more than a .500 record and a first (second) round loss in the tourney to go anywhere. He's no longer going to be hired by name but by output. He's got pressure from himself to do a good job. If you really knew what you typed then you wouldn't have seen any comparison between what you and I typed. But I do see that is you strategy, try to twist things like the whole MN angle, lame.

If you don't think his name won't get him further up the ladder then I want whatever you're smoking, buddy. You know darn well that in this world it's about "who you know". Besides, this is Minnesota...whoever hires him next will probably do so out of pity. You need to realize that the "U" isn't anywhere near a high profile program which leaves A LOT of room for Richy Rich to move up to a better program.

Why do I get this feeling that if they would have hired Charles Manson you'd be on board with it, in lockstep with the other kool-aid chugging bobo's?

I'll admit that I didn't read many of the posts earlier, but after going back it appears I'm not the only "dark cloud". whistle

His name got him the FIU job. He's in the bigs now, he needs to prove he belongs. His name may give him opportunities but landing at a bigger program, well his record will determine that. If you think otherwise then you're just wrong. Pat Knight went from Texas Tech to Lamar, I wonder why he didn't land at a major program? You also switched your tune from high profile to a better program, conceding a little? You have no clue what you are talking about, pack it up you're in a box.
