Why did Rich leave FIU? And why don't you think he'll leave here?

Heck, he left FIU after one mediocre season. I gave him the benefit of the doubt that he'll be here 2-3 years!

I know right! Future with CUSA FIU or Big 10 Gophs? Why did he leave? He had it way better there...

You do this to your self.

And in 2-3 years it'll be "Future with Gophs or a high profile program?"

Starting to figure it out yet?

You do this to yourself.

That must mean those 2-3 years will be pretty good seasons. I'm up for that! I think Jr is a little smarter than to make those statements and bail out. He certainly has a big enough name to live up to and he doesn't seem like a shmuck. The more I think about it the more I like the hire.

I certainly expect excellence from Pitino. If we get that I for one will be satisfied.

He comes highly recommended by folks who truly know basketball...unlike Lmit and his short ad libs laugh

It does takes more than an 18-14 record to impress me, heck Tubby had a better record and DID NOT impress me...how a person got to 18-14 where they are at is what matters......QUOTE from The Associated Press & CBS Link to the full story at the end...

A day after his son Richard Pitino agreed to become the next head coach at Minnesota, Rick Pitino proclaimed the 30-year-old up-and-comer “more than ready” for the challenge. Richard Pitino only has one year of head coaching experience, but he has served as an assistant under his father at Louisville and under Billy Donovan at Florida.

“I drove him harder than I drove Billy so he’s more than ready,” Rick Pitino said Thursday in Atlanta, where his Cardinals are preparing to take on Wichita State in the Final Four. “What he did this year at Florida International, I never thought anybody could do. He took walk-ons, eight new players, he turned around a bad academic situation and won 18 games and was a bucket away from going to the NCAA (tournament) his first year. So he is ready to coach. I feel bad that I drove him that hard, now I’m happy I did.”

Richard Pitino went 18-14 at Florida International after taking over a reeling program that suffered under former coach Isiah Thomas. He fits the profile that Minnesota athletic director Norwood Teague has preferred in the past — a young, hungry, charismatic grinder who relishes a challenge....Click for the rest of the story

Rick, I agree and that is precisely my point. If he could do that at FIU, I have high hopes for him here. Will that mean he stays his entire career in MN? Time will tell, but I really doubt it. There isnt much longevity in sports these days, but I do think this was a good hire and I am impressed with his work ethic and comments from folks who know a thing or two about basketball unlike folks like strikeout

There isn't a shortage of good coaches out there and there aren't many programs like Minnesota. When you think about "high profile" programs, a lot have long term great coaching such as Mich State, Duke, UNC, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, UCLA-now, Syracuse, Louisville, Florida, Arizona, Indiana, Ohio State, Georgetown (Im not a fan of the dynasty there).

There is not going to be an opening in 2-3 years at any of those programs, as far as higher profile... What were you thinking? Like a Villanova or something? If Jr can produce some winning seasons, recruit, and build then wouldn't he put together a contender here? Young guys like Jr want to win soooo bad because they know how tough it is. If the pieces are in place he is not going to bail out because he knows the opportunities only come around once in a while. Sr, in 30+ years of coaching at only 4 schools, has brought 7 teams to the final four. Do you think dear old dad is going to encourage him to leave or build like he has done? Is there a place out there in the future that is more attractive than here? Absolutely, but hes not going to fall there in 2-3 years if he has success here and we should be able to pay him to keep him.

I get the feeling LMIT is some cranky old fart who thinks all these young whipper snappers are skateboarding, eyebrow ring wearing no-gooders. Look at this guys background and upbringing, is there anything you see to be a pattern that makes you believe the thoughts you have or are you just an ornery old man?

You do realize that I'm not the only one saying what I'm saying, don't you?

I make one little comment and the delusional MN sports fans come out of the woodwork frothing at the mouth in defense of their guy, who as I said earlier could be Charles Manson but it wouldn't matter because it's "their guy" and that's all it boils down to.

Keep up your blind loyalty because you have a reputation to maintain: Loserville, USA. I know you're new here but your doing an outstanding job thus far.

Since you are so enlightened, who is/was YOUR guy?

This ought to be interesting.

BTW, its dillusional not delusional. If you are going to accuse someone of something at least spell it correctly.

I’m intrigued. Things were looking bleak as time dragged on but they got the right guy it appears. They needed someone young that had the energy and motivation to recruit hard and not point out all the limitations of the program. It’s like buying stock – if you don’t get these guys to come to MN when they are cheap, they’re not coming at all. He can build a good program here, he just needs a chance and he'll get one.

All the Minnesota sports fatalists are worried about the guy moving on – so what? That’s the case with any coach. If you have success, the program and the coach get further ahead. If he leaves to replace his father in five years, it means the Gophers found some success.

The thing you can look to and be happy about is the style of play. He said he wants to press on makes and play up tempo. They have a backcourt that can do that and do it well and a frontcourt that can’t be relied on for anything. Shooter at the St. Paul paper was projecting Otto as a starter next year! As I’ve said before, it’s a team that begs to get out and run and not stagnate in the halfcourt and chuck up shots from poor shooters. The barn is a tough place to play when the crowd is worked up, and since half the season ticket holders are +/- 10 years from collecting social security, they can’t generate the excitement on their one. Steal the ball, get some run outs, and fans will come out and cheer loudly. Heck, at times they’ll blow the lid off the place.

Pitino has a private jet to recruit with, which Tubby never had, and Teague says plans will be drawn up by next month for the practice facility. At least one contribution towards said facility has come in, according to the athletic department. Pointing this boat in the right direction starts with minor adjustments.

Wow, not sure where you got all this from....please show us an example to back up the ridiculous off base statements you vomited out above? Talk about delusional, that's all you seem to spew. He may not end up being a great coach but at this point we need to go through coaches until we get one to take us to excellence.

I don't see anyone frothing at the mouth or any blind loyalty...except you with respect to your extreme bashing of Rich Pitino laugh

Actually from the other posters on here the negativity seems to come from the public spending for the buy-out (lets see you waffle that way now). I know they're others out there that share your view. I can say that you are herd mentality as well.... Surviving on pessimism, its sad there are so many out there like this.

Are you saying he'll have a "kick a@@ offense"???

Where have we heard that before...

Nope, not at all. You're stretching there to fit it in the shtick. To be honest I'm more excited about the defense. The frontcourt is too much of an unknown for me to stick my neck too far out, but I will guess Pitino's teams will score more points, including in B1G play, than Tubby's teams of the past. Look at Rich's forced turnover percentage. The more turnovers you can generate, the more fast break opportunities you can get.

as a guy with no horse in this race, let me go out on a LIM and say that three years of coach patino sounds about right. did he leave the state of florida because there was more talent in minnesota? he got paid, and the next school that wants to pay him more will get him. perhaps he'll go coach in the NBA for a couple of seasons, twice.

i think he will make an imediate impact with the gophers, but will seek greener pastures sooner rather than later.
