ID on Portable Shelter

Not sure if that has been brought up, but I noticed in the new regs, there is a new law saying you are no longer required to display an ID on your portable shelter.

Up until now you always needed your DL or DNR number displayed.

All shelters, except for occupied* portable shelters, placed on the ice

of Minnesota waters must have either the

(1) complete name and address, (2) driver’s license number, or (3) the

nine-digit Minnesota DNR number on the license of the owner plainly

and legibly displayed on the outside in letters, and figures at least

2 inches in height. *A person using a portable shelter on the ice that

does not display identification must remain within 200’ of the shelter

I just looked at a 2011 reg book and it says:

The following regulations apply to all shelters used on all Minnesota

waters, unless otherwise noted elsewhere in this booklet.

• All shelters placed on the ice of Minnesota waters must have either the

(1) complete name and address, (2) driver’s license number, or (3) the

nine-digit Minnesota DNR number on the license of the owner plainly

and legibly displayed on the outside in letters, and figures at least

2 inches in height.

A shelter may not be left unattended anytime between midnight and one hour prior to sunrise unless the shelter is licensed.

I think a few years ago they did away with the license requirement for portables unless you leave them overnight. But I guess the ID thing stayed. I've never had an ID on my portable and I've never had a CO say anything about it either. Whether I was inside it or outside it. I've never left a portable unattended.

i wonder what brought on the change

probably because nobody does it.

honestly, I haven't seen many portables that have it. and in the rare occasion that I do, I wonder why they are still doing that.

I thought all of that ID requirement went away along with the dark house license.

Think it changed a couple years ago and it was over occupied vs non occupied portables.....well, thats when I stopped doing it anyways....don't remember anything about being within 200 ft though.

Indeed this is true (in regards to the license number anyhow), but not relevant to the changes that Dtro has indicated.

As far as I can determine Darren, this means that no indicators are necessary on an occupied shelter.

I'm ok with this.

2011 ain't 2013.

DTro is correct with the new regulation regarding no portable shelter ID.

I think what others are referring to is the 2008 regulation change that no longer required a license(or tag) if the shelter was not left unattended overnight.

At that time (2008-present), the regulations still required an ID to be placed on the shelter.

I still have a quart mason jar full of those tags. I might have to dump it out and see how far back I can go.

To think some folks have never laid eyes on one (tag), tells me how much fishing has changed in recent years.

The ID requirement was changed effective 2012/2013. Last winter, i.e. 2011/2012 I received two warnings on LOTW for not having an ID displayed. Funny thing was on one of the occassions, the CO did not walk around to the other side of my house, where there was an ID and I did not recall having one there either.

The way i read it is the house has to be occupied in order to meet the definition. If you leave for any amount of time it is considered un-occupied and then you need to have it marked. This is just how i interpret the law but I could be completely wrong.

It sounds to me that they have kind of taken away a little glitch in the law that would allow a CO to give a ticket for an unoccupied shelter with no license if a guy was outside of it doing some hole hopping around it. Now, as long as you are within 200 feet it's basically considered occupied.

The way it was written before, if you were tending to a tip-up (which can be up to 200 ft away) you could technically be given a ticket for not having a license on your shelter. Doubt any were written for that, but this just seems to me to take that away.
