E locks ?

I bought a set when i bought my hds unit with ss/ds. The only time i really used it is when i stayed at chase on the lake in walker when 100's of people had access to the docks...and all i can say is i still have my hds unit!

I guess i trust it when i dock the boat and head in doors for awhile but at night the unit gets taken out of the boat.

The one thing i'm curious about is if one key can unlock all units?

P.s. i'd buy it again..."some"security for expensive electronics

My unit comes off the boat and is locked in the vehicle unless I'm within eye distance. My ram mount is screwed into the boat, so even with the locks all it would take is a screwdriver. I I've been tempted to buy those locks, but it only takes me 45sec to remove it and put it into a case and in the vehicle.

Even when paying for gas, I'm peering out the window waiting for someone to steel anything from the boat. I've got locks on all my boat storage. Don't trust anyone with my stuff anymore.

Neat idea, as someone who only removes theirs when putting it away for the season these may be a good investment....They also sit out in the back yard uncovered all summer, as does the several grand in muskie baits and rods/reels...Now if anyone would get the idea there may or may not be a few firearms inside the house grin

Too bad you aren't allowed to use them to protect your property in Minnesota. frown

Never take them off or equipment out of my rig even when up north, I figure theres lots nicer boats than mine sitting there mine will be the last choice to borrow off of lol... Nobody at camp secures any of their boats, a couple will cover them if theres a chance of rain thats about it... When taveling I do have the cover on and always within sight...

I saw an add for these over the weekend and my first thought was, what about the mounting screws. Looks like anyone with a phillips or allen wrench plus a small cresent could still easily remove the unit.

Looks to me like they locked the doors and left the windows open.

You guys that take your electronics off and put them in your vehicle overnight may want to check your auto policy to make sure that the personal equipment dollar value will cover the sonars.

+1 mine would be covered in the boat but not in my truck.

Agreed, but the thought is likely to deter the criminal that would just hit the release and grab these things, not the thief that actually carries around tools

yes the quick grabber is all I'm really worried with and honestly if the thief is the carry tools type what else can they take along with the graphs ummm anything and everything... I have older units 2004on the boat but would rather not have to deal with stuff just walking away without some hassle...

I did talk to my ins company and they said that anything bolted to the boat is covered on the boat but I have to add personal property to the boat policy for rods reels baits etc...

I have a deeded access so it will be on a lift about 1/2 block away

I don't have a >$1000 sonar/GPS system on my boat, but the $300 sonar that I have comes off unless I'm in the boat. I've caught a couple people that were "just checking out your boat, man" at gas stations and bait stores. My boat is >30 years old. It isn't worth "checking out". My stuff inside it is though.

No piece of electronics is worth shooting somebody over.

I've thought about buying these. I still might. As others have said, I'm not worried about the guy who carries tools and is going to work on removing it. Its deterring the grab and run guy that I'm most concerned about.

Mine are covered with a $100 deductible if stolen from my boat. Generally the only coverage someone has if stolen from the car (or anywhere outside the boat), would be on the personal property coverage of their homeowners policy. And that is subject to the deductible which is most likely $1000 or higher, AND would probably increase homeowner’s premiums. Long story short... Make sure you cover these under your boat policy.

Even if insurance replaced your unit, loosing your waypoints would be devastating.

yes that is exactly what the ins company said I have 2 options add extra coverage to the boat or risk it if the items stolen are worth it then take out a claim against the homeowners policy which mine is $1000 deductible

generally speaking I think most like 90% of the scum are opportunistic and rely on easy takes this is the type of thing that would deter them...

the other question for you ram users since the balls are just pinched would a crook be able to just rip the ball out of the mount itself or arm?

I think it would be fairly hard to bend the arm enough to get the ball out, although a big screwdriver would maybe make it doable. My first question would be, what is holding the whole thing to the console? What happens if the ball mounted to the console gets a good whap with a hammer or equivalent?

A battery powered angle grinder with a metal cutting disk makes short work out of the locks on storage wars. I am not sure what the state of the art for bicycle thieves is but they classically come equipped with various tools.

Might deter the guy who might grab something out of impulse because it would be easy. But the serious guy, I don't think so.
