buzbunni
Ok, I realize this topic comes up every season, but it's just so darned confusing that I had to ask...yet again. My license says (and I quote): Expires February 28th, 2013 (Unless noted elsewhere)The regs booklet says (quoting again): RESIDENT LICENSES (for fishing the license is valid March 2012-April 30th, 2013)So, do I need to get a new license on March 1st, or not? Is my trout stamp still valid through April 30th?There may be a very good reason for the ambiguity of the license dates, but I find it to be an annoying and confusing situation.Shed some light if you can...Thanks.Signed,Annoyed guy. MnCatGuy
Your good until April 30th on your current license. I'm not 100% sure about the trout stamp but I believe that's good until March 31.
cavalierowner
Your license should also say under the Items Purchased: Effective Dates: 03/01/2012 - 04/30/2013. Or at least that's what the one I purchased online and printed out says. So I take that as the "unless noted elsewhere" dates. In any case, it's confusing as h**l and makes no sense. I just don't get why they have that statement on the signature part.
g_anoka
Mncat guy is correct, your fishing license is good until April 30th. Now if you are like me and have the combo license, the hunting part of the license expires the end of Feb. Statring march 1 you can buy a fishing license that is good until April 30th of 2014, confused? Alot of people are, I am sure my son will call me this week asking when his fishing license expires, just like he did last year, and the year before and.................................................. amateurfishing
yes u r good till apri 30, i think the poorly worded ambiguity in the regs book is about the difft seasons that close at difft times such as walleye & pike this weekend but no special stamps for those, just remember u r dealing with govt on this. SXViper
On my license it saysQuote 217- Resident Combination Sports Fishing Expires 04/30/2013So to me it is not confusing at all. Printed out Plain and simple in black and blue.I too came to the "unless noted elsewhere" . So I took it upon myself to see if it was noted elsewhere. I didn't blame anyone for confusing me. I followed directions.

DTro
It makes too much sense to do a Jan 1 renewal date.
cavalierowner
It makes too much sense to do a Jan 1 renewal date. That's what they used to do quite a few years ago. Everyone I knew (including me!)complained about having to get a license in the middle of ice fishing. But then that was back when you had to stand in line to get a license, along with everyone else who put it off til the last minute. I personally much prefer the way it is now. PierBridge
I agree with Cavalier. I think it would be a nightmare doing it in the middle of Winter with all the ice-fishermen we have now a days. With the concentration of Ice Anglers and the greatly increased ability of Law-Enforcement to check anglers in bunches it would sure be a field day for the DNR in the ticket writing category. It's not that hard if you want to buy another on or before April 30th which is the date you are good until for go for it. If not and you are like me and can't wait to renew go in on the February 28th or anytime after that date at your own leisure and get your new licenses/stamps. DTro
Ok, well then the license should be good for one year after your purchase date like they do it in other states. If I spend the full amount right now, it should not be good for only a couple of months.
g_anoka
Dtro did I miss something? I was under the impression that a license purchased after March 1 would be valid until April 30th of 2014.
DTro
No what I mean is that every license purchase should be good for one year.Example I purchase it in July, then its good until the next July.
forcedtowork
It would be so much easier if they just did Jan 1 to Jan !, not sure why they need to make it so difficult
flyfisher03
Or 1 year from date of purchase.
cavalierowner
Personally I sure hope they never go 1 year from date of purchase. Then it would be one more thing I would have to remember unless I were buying it the same time every year. Here's what would happen to me sure as heck. Year one I would postpone it til spring crappies. Year two I wouldn't get out for spring crappies and would postpone it til Opener. Year three I'd be fighting the crowds to get a license along with most other people. Then it would be just like it used to be with a January to January license. And I REALLY wouldn't want to go back to a Jan. to Jan. license like it used to be!
kevfish1
How about changing it so that you do not need a fishing license. Just tax cigarettes and the over-weight .
bturck
I heard they changed the Jan 1st date because a lot of people waited until the last minute on Dec 31st, New Year's Eve. Many tackle/bait shops closed early that day so people were unable to get the license if they wanted to head out that night. I heard this from a CO several years ago. I agree with Dtro, buy it feb 1 and its good until the next year Feb 1, or whatever date as long as its a one year license.

SXViper
DTro, can you tell me what states do the license is food for a year? I checked Wisconsin, South Dakota, and North Dakota and all of them are similar to Minnesota. Seems that everyone just needs something to complain about these days, or they know how to do it better. PerchPounder
Iowa license expire jan 10. close enough to the first and seems to work well if your a resident you can renew starting dec 1 and its good for the entire next season.
Scott M
I actually like how they have it set up, as long as you buy a new one between March 1 and April 30, you are getting more than a year. So you have a pretty wide range in which you are covered rather than having to go get one on Jan. 1 before you next wet a line.
Alagnak
No matter what state at what time of the year if I am buying a 3 day it should be good for 3 days, 7 day= 7 day, and when I buy a YEARLY license, it should be good for a YEAR from the date of purchase. Scott M
There are a few states that offer annual licenses that are good for one year from date of purchase, but I think most cater to their law enforcement and issue licenses that fit within the seasons. Northlander
I like it like this. That way I know I need to get my license before opener. What about Wi. I wish they would be the same date so I could get them both on the same day.
