Need some help....not seeing fish

Hey everyone,

I have not been doing well spearing this year, ever since I left the GTG. I have been out 10+ times and have only seen two spearable fish. I have been spearing in the 8 to 11 foot range, and have tried 6 new lakes. I just can't seem to find the fish this winter. I am thinking about going out again tomorrow morning, and was looking for some advice. Anyone have a suggestion of a lake around the west metro that I would have a good change of seeing some pike. Feel free to PM me if you don't want to make it public. Or if you know of a certain type of structure that the pike are using this time of year that I can look for on the lake maps.

I really appreciate any help, just looking for a few pike to eat.

Well my luck turned around this morning. Only saw one fish but that was all it took to make my day. She came in once and all I could see was her head in the hole but I could tell it was a big fish. As soon as I picked up the spear she came unglued and was out of there. 30 to 45 min. later she came back in on a mission to eat my sucker, and she did. Had the hole thing in her mouth when she spun around in the hole and gave me a nice shot right behind the head. She measured 36 1/4", I guess patience pays off.

Great fish Bowhunt. Not trying to be controversial but that fish is why some people don't like slot limits. That would be a legal fish on a slot lake but you wouldn't dare spear it because you just can't tell until you measure. That is the reason I quit spearing slot lakes. I passed up fish that I was pretty sure were legal.

Bowhunt, I see the spearing slow down each year mid to late Jan. Then it picks up again in Feb. I went through a dry spell and wasn't seeing much the last two weeks. I speared a nice one the other day and am seeing others spearing picking up now too! Try ro find an area that is in 9 ft. with a deep hole or deeper area as close as you can to your set up! ><B>

cold spell and wind make the clarity decrease and when ice temps drop really fast causing some fish to stop all together. I do agree the late season will be better as we get a little warmer temps and longer days of sun which should increase fish movement and feeding activity.

About the worst thing you can do to try to consistantly find fish is to consistently fish different lakes. Start with a lake with good populations of northerns and stay on it until you can start to make some sense of it. 2c

      As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…

      I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...

      Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?

      I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.

      Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.

      The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.

      It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.

      We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there,but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
