Best way to weigh fish

Recommended Posts

I have bought a few scales throughout the years and it seems like I have terrible luck with most. I dont think the spring loaded ones are very accurate. The digital ones seem more accurate but also dont seem to last very long before they dump out.

In the last 5 years or more I have stopped using a scale and just simply measure my fish by the inch. It also seems better for the fish. When I used to use a scale, the fish would more often than not shake off the scale and hit the floor. Not good. I have seen the gripper scales that seem like they have merit. They grip the fish in the water and have a scale built in. I have considered purchasing one of these but they are also a little pricey.

I like just holding them up to the ruler attached to my gunnel taking a quick measure and tossing it overboard.

+1 for the gripper scales. as for accuracy, i compared both field and stream's spring scale and electric and my gripper scale, the electric and the spring scale were the two closest to each other while the gripper scale was off abit. when weighing a big fish with a non gripper scale, i put it on the tournament weighing bag that i use for tournaments and weigh it that way. just zero out the weight of the bag before you weight the fish.

I purchased the new tournament scale this fall, it's really nice but unfortunetly it was off by .38lbs, that's kind of a big difference. Might have gotten lemon but ill return it and try another.

Mr

Mine is off by roughly the same amount, if youre talking 5 fish limits. Every tournament our bag weighed a little more on the weigh in scale but chalked it up to flopping fish and weigh bag weight.

Its plenty close for me. As long as it's consistent for culling purposes.
