Hand Augers

I'm in the market for a hand auger. I wanted 7", but see that Strike Master only has 5", 6", and 8".

Is there a 7" hand auger?

How are the Strike Masters compare to the Mora or HT?

Thanks for the replies

I have an 8" Mora and it can be a workout with a decent amount of ice but I only use it early and late season and for the money it works great. I've also used a 6" lazer and that seemed to cut like butter compared to my 8" Mora at the time but it's double to price. So I suppose you get what you pay for.

Strikemaster does make a 7 inch hand auger in both the Lazer model(LD-7) and Mora Model(MD-7).

Mora's are the blue colored strikemasters and the Lazers are the black colored ones.

reeds has them in their catalog.

the Strikemaster lazer 7" is $94.99 and the Strikemaster Mora 7" is $59.99

Hi Brad,

Talking hand augers, BPS auger for 6 inches. There are 33 reviews and everyone has good things to say....except the screws on the blades break off. I am not sure what the deal is. However, people go to the local hardware store and replace them and they are good to go. The reviews state that you can drill 14 inches in a couple minutes.

If you were to put in order, your preference for hand augers (will be used all season long...no motorized), what would your list look like. Is Strikemaster the best?

Last year I had an HT and it was just a piece of junk. I even replaced the blades and it still took 25 minutes to bust through 20+ inches of ice.

Thank you sir,

Michael

for hand augers I prefer the Strikemaster Lazer hand Auger. I currently have a 8" but will be picking up a 6" one also. my second choice would be the Strikemaster Mora (tried and true, if the lazer was not on the market this is what I would have). I think you get what you pay for. I would look at getting a 6" Strikemaster Lazer Synthetic.

Masoct3,

Clean out you PM mail box. If you want to drive to Monticello I have a 6" Strikemaster Mora I will give you for free. I got it as part of a auction lot. I have no use for it. I do plan to buy a 6" lazer hand auger instead. The mora would only need new blades put on it since what is on it is rusty. PM me and we can work out the details.

Unless you are going after monster pike, I would definitely recommend the 6" Lazer. Cuts like butter, and will do 12" of ice in about a minute with little effort - don't have to put a bunch of weight into it, pretty much drils itself.

I tried to be smart, by selling my original 6" and upgrading to a 7". That was a big mistake. Lot more effort drilling, so I sold it. If I get another it will be another 6" lazer (maybe one with a synthtic bit).

Let's say I am on Lake Minnetonka in the middle of winter and the ice is 22 inches thick, how long would it take to pop a hole? How long at 11? 6? Since I am getting the Base Camp, I am going to pop three holes at least, two for me, one for the flasher. If others come, I will want to open more holes at that point.

Did I get what I paid for ($30) for the HT brand, granted it was a nice weight, but when I would go with someone, one of us would have to body weight the auger to get it going "at its best"? Alone, my entire arm fits down the ice hole so you can imagine how long that took. I also replaced the blades which were ultra sharp and it increased it maybe 5 or 10 percent, so I gave up and sold that.

I can't tell you how long it takes to pop a hole in 22, 11 or 6 inches of ice. What I can tell you is that if it's more than 12 inches or so I use my power auger (but I punch a lot of holes and move around a lot).

If I was using a hand auger in 22 inches of ice, I would go with a Nils or a SM Lazer, because those augers are going to cut the quickest and the easiest and with the least amount of effort.

And I would not go bigger than 6 inches for a hand auger .... a 6 inch hole should be plenty big enough, and is going to be much easier to cut than a 7 or 8 inch hole.

Also, I would not be opening a 3rd hole for the flasher, I would use the flasher in the hole I was fishing in.

Hope that helps, and good luck.

Yes sometimes I will go after pike thus thinking 7" and I won't be popping holes all over or in thick ice. Brandon can do that with the Jiffy. It's more for early ice and pike/crappies/walleyes so I can get out whenever and hit the dusk bite. But if it's that much more work, then.... may go 6". But that seems small. (Hold the, "That's what she said... jokes") whistle
