Got an elk

Well this was my third year hunting elk in MT and I finally got the job done. Moved here 4 years ago for college and had to sit the first year out until I could establish residency. Had a lot of fun the first few weeks of archery season and had 5 different bulls bigger than this one within 60 yards but never got a clean shot at any of them and never let an arrow fly. Opening day of rifle season I got my chance. I was actually targeting deer as we had seen a few different bucks in this area but got a big surprise when I stumbled on this bull and 6 or 7 cows/calves. It was nice to spot them at about 160 yards and not have to plan how I was gonna cut that down to 40 yards. He gave me a broadside shot and I took a crack. The herd scattered a bit but were confused about where the shot came from and they didn't bolt real hard. I wasn't sure if I had hit him or not so I took a second shot as he was on a trot quartering away. He kept on trotting and I kept the crosshairs on him until he stopped about 50 yards later. He was facing straight away at this point so I was hesitant to take another shot not knowing if the first ones had hit him. Then I could see the legs seemed to be getting a little wobbly and sure enough he tipped over. I had forgotten both my phone and camera somehow that morning so I got him gutted and hiked a couple miles back to my vehicle so I could drive back home and get some help. My girlfriend and I came back to snap a couple quick photos and then got him quartered up and into game bags. Another buddy of mine was on his way back to MT from ID and he made a detour to come help us pack. Between the 3 of us we got him out in one trip. Freezer will be stocked for awhile now and it sure feels nice to not have the monkey on my back anymore! Here are a few photos.
