Describe Your Stand.

Recommended Posts

I enjoy the views of people pictures from their stands, but describe yours. I think it is neat how we sit in so many different types of places to all accomplish the same thing.

I hunt public land between Brainerd and Emily. I sit in a ladder stand strapped to a pine tree in a bit of a saddle with tapering ridges on each side. It seems to be a nice travel corridor as it has some nice cover and undergrowth amongst the predominantly pine forest. The best cover is about 50 yards away in the form of a small 20 yard circular depression that has grown up and is really thick. They sure stick right along that edge when coming by.

What is your stand like?

My favorite rifle stand is 5 x 5 enclosed stand with heater/windows. I made it pretty comfy so the kids will come with and enjoy it. It sits on the edge of a funnel about 100 yards wide that connects big hard woods and a tamarac swamp. Pretty good in the mornings. The neighbors hunt most of the big woods pretty hard so they are good at bumping deer towards me. The longest shot here would be about 175 yards. Pretty solid for pretty much any wind.

I hunt public land and normally use a climber. I have a nice spot picked out that sits on a hill overlooking a long skinny valley that runs along a swamp. The swamp is too wet for deer so they have to go around it. The valley seems to be their natural travel path as the only other option is to climb the ridge which would be more exposed. The valley contines to the north where it goes along yet another swamp. Between the two swamps is a natural funnel the deer have to use unless they want to walk a half mile or more out of their way to go around either of the swamps. My spot is overlooking the valley and the most highly traveled path between the two swamps.

I found this spot last year and there is a older wood stand nearby but it wasn't used during the 4 days I hunted this spot. I'm hoping its the same this year. If so I might opt to hunt from the permanent stand instead since it looks to be in good shape and pretty comfortable. While scouting this year I gave it a good look to check stability and I also left a few chunks of wood on the seat so I know if someone has been using it before me since I won't be up there until thursday after opener.

Which one? I have too many but I will list some of my favorite areas.

The first one I have to hike about 800 yards of bog before I reach just a few slivers of high ground that are separated by a creek. This is a good bedding area so I have to be extra quiet when I slip into the stand.

Some of my other are nice funnel stands:

One sits on the edge of a lake, a swamp extends on my end of the late the and deer cross there. I love it when its cold enough to freeze the top of the water in the swamp, you can hear the deer breaking ice on their way through.

Another is a large beaver dam that connects two mega chuncks of land, at least 1500 acres of high ground on either side of me. This is one of two crossings in this river valley, I hope to have another stand at the other crossing next year. This is a new spot but I have high hopes for it.

Another funnel stand is a pinch point next to a river. The high ground from the north narrows down to a point were I have a stand, to the south two larger areas of high ground are about 3-400 yards away. Shot a nice one mid-day in 2010 off this stand, again high hopes for this year.

Some of my other favorites are doe bedding areas, just about any logged area that has 3-12 years of regrowth is fair game. I setup right inside the thick stuff and trim some shooting lanes. I have about 3-4 setups like this.

I hunt primarily public land. I have a hang on stand that I used primarily before my kids started hunting. I bought a double ladder stand to hunt with the kids. My traditional spot is in a State forest in a big pine. Trails criss crossing in front of me from all directions and have taken deer pretty much from all directions except behind my stand. I'm hunting a new location this year due to population being too low in my traditional area but still public land (National Forest). I'll probably be hunting on the ground for a fair portion checking the new area out and then will hunt from a hang on when I find a good spot. I personally love being out in the elements with the critters!
