Base Layer (clothing)

Recommended Posts

What do you guys wear for a base layer when you go hunting. I am talking about rifle hunting, its 0 in the morning when you go to the stand. I would like to get a top and bottom for under $100 but I havent seen anything I really liked.

Right now I go out with ten layers of cotton on, I am usually sweating my rear end off by the time I get in the tree and freezing once the sun comes up.

Do they shrink when you wash them?

There are a lot of different brands out there that are all pretty good. If UnderArmor is obviously the biggest name but there are others now and most stores carry one or two brands. YOu shouldn't have much a problem finding a top and bottom for under $100. I bought a new pair of bottoms this year and I think I paid around $40-50 for them, the tops were about the same.

You should also notice a big difference just by getting rid of the cotton. If you are sweating alot while wearing cotton you'll be incredibly cold. Honestly you'd probably feel warmer sitting out the in a dry tshirt and a dry pair of shorts then in 10 layers of wet cotton.

After whatever base layer you find I would add layers of fleece, wool, or any other wicking material. There are a ton out there right now. Just avoid cotton at all costs.

The warmest I have found so far is Cabelas polar tech expedition weight. I've been very happy with it. I also just bought some mid weight merino wool tops and bottoms from Minus33 that are very nice, and affordable. I would think their heavier weight ones would be great for stand hunting. I layer over these with fleece and wool and very rarely get cold deer hunting. That's spending most days without ever leaving my stand, too. I'd suggest staying away from Under Armor, personally. I think it's way over priced and mine never even leaves the dresser drawer anymore. About all they have going for them is their marketing, in my opinion.

The other thing I've found that will keep you much warmer in the stand is something to go around your neck to act as a scarf. This seems to make a huge difference for me if I get chilled.

After living in Texas for 40 years....I ain't waitin for 0 degrees before Ima bundle up. Shoot, it's already been in the teens.

A few days ago Friday morning, it was 18 in Isanti {north metro part}.

I learned my leson first time I hunted in MN about 10 years ago? It was

negative -20 on gun opener up in Marcell. I sat in a open box tree stand with a lil ol' cat heater. With my clothes from Texas I froze. I was so cold I kept close to that lil heater. My toes were the first to get the coldest, so I kept inching my feet closer to the heater praying someone would hurry up and shoot something and come pick us up. Before I knew it my boots were melting because I had them so close to the heater. Finally here comes someone to pick us up cause they got cold too. The wheeler ride back to the cabin did me in. I froze a bunch more going back as there wasn't an nth of body warmth left in me at all. My fingers were frost bit at this point, I pretty much take extra precaution now.

Every fall, first thing I do is buy a pallet load of tosti toes or something like that. Please do not think I am kidding because I buy so much I think that's why they sell them in bulk packages now. yes sir. wink

for the other stuff I have,.. I have them special made.

I have an extra insulated mad bomber hat, a super delux pair of marshmellow pants, I even have a special made scent control neck warmer, it's a blaze orange half hoodie that will drape down the front chest and back. Looks like a regular hoodie that's missin a few parts, Cabelllla's made it for me. My boots are still the same with the extra hole in 'em but the toasti toe thingy's are working great.

After living here awhile now I have a drawer full of fleece pajamas. That's what I wear for my base layer....every day now!

Also, get rid of those cotton tube socks most people wear daily. HUGE difference. Get some cheap wicker moister socks and some cheap 'ol wool socks at fleet farm or where ever on sale. It truly is a game changer if trying to stay out all day.
