LImit and license question

I am going to take my 2 granddaughters fishing next week for a day. They are 7 and 11. I am assuming they do not need a license since I have one and I would assume we can have 1 limit for all of us.

Is that correct?

Thanks for the help on this one with kids.

Thanks for the verification. Didn't want to go out and have issues with a CO as that would not be the best way to introduce them to fishing. They can throw some back if they want to catch more. I don't want them to learn that they need to keep everything they catch. Keep some for the next day or year or others.

I would love to teach them to catch a meal and let the others go and enjoy the day on the water.

I am building both of them new fishing rods so they can have a nice rod to start out with.

Best post I've read in weeks. Getting a limit in a short amount of time and doing it as many days as possible, even legally (gifting, fish fries, ect) is still way too en vouge, IMO. Had a guy tell me he couldn't let a 6# pound northern go, even though he dreaded cleaning it at the end of the day.....he didn't have a choice in his mind. Nice to see some of the elders teaching the youngsters they do have options. Nice work, Harvey, I hope you and the grandkids get into em!

I have never read or heard of what relations have to do licences as I take my nieces, nephews and their friends fishing at the cabin all the time, never had a problem. Just asked their age and for my license. But things may change, so I can't say for sure.

As for taking them out and teaching them not only just how to catch a fish, but also ethical fishing practices... Priceless! and for the rods as well.. all I can say is my most valued possessions in the world is the fishing rod and rifle my grandpa gave me as a kid and how to use them safely and responsibly.(and yes they are still putting the occasional special meal on the table when "We" go out.)

Bless your soul Grandpa Harvey Lee. smile

Since when did kids need to be around adults to be able to fish and keep limits if their under 16yrs of age?

I just saw this thread and was about to ask the same question. I'm pretty sure that kids do not have to be accompanied by an adult to fish or keep fish. Granted it was a LOT of years ago, but my friends and I fished all the time by ourselves before we were 16.

But I would suggest a quick e-mail to DNR just to be sure. I doubt that the answer "But Bruce said they could" would hold up as a defense grin

MN regs state that kids under 16 fish for free as no license is needed. Does not matter who takes them from what I read or for that matter that they even need supervision.

I do not plan on keeping more than 1 limit but I am going to call St Paul to see what the law is as now I am questioning what the law is.

Better check the regs closely as Grandchildres are different in the regs than Children .

I cannot find anything of what you suggested in the Mn regs. Maybe you are thinking of Missouri or another state.

I am going to call St Paul just so I know what the law is. Wish you would have stated what the difference was so I did not have to search for what you seem to know.

That's because there is no such thing as a family license in Minnesota, only a husband and wife license. If your grandson was over 16 he would need his own individual non resident license, if he was under 16 he would not need a license and would be able to keep a limit of fish.

Got this off DNR HSOforum;

Angling - family (nr)

Description:

Valid for nonresident husband and wife (legally married as recognized by MN law) and children under age 16. Allows children under age 16 to possess their own limit of fish. (Single parents may also choose this license to include children under 16). See Fishing Regulations.

Buy license online

Fishing regulations

Angling information

Fee:

$ 52.50

Page 7 of the regs:

"All residents age 15 and younger are allowed to take their own limit of fish without purchasing a license."

Because they are residents they don't even need an adult with them to fish or keep a limit.

Finns, here is the reg on pg 7 that you are concerned with:

"Nonresidents - All nonresidents age 16 and older are required to have an appropriate fishing license while angling. Nonresidents under age 16 do not need a license if the parent or guardian is licensed. Children of an adult who has a Minnesota nonresident family license may possess their own limit of fish. However, if the adult has an individual license, the child’s fish are included in the adult’s limit. Nonresidents under age 16 may purchase a nonresident youth license and possess their own limit of fish."

So if you buy a family license and fib saying the child is yours they can keep their own limit otherwise you would need to buy them a youth nr license for $17

Tom, you're OK because your grandkids are MN residents. You could take out neices, nephews, or any random kids, and even let them keep limits of fish, as long as they're MN residents. Finn's issues seem to be related to the nonresident status.

Now I hope the wind will drop a bit for tomorrow.

Seems a few days ago Tuesday was to be 3-5mph for wind. Now, more like 13-20mph.

They have been in boats many times so I hope the wind does not become an issue. If it does, I guess we go to the shore that is the calmest. Not where I wanted to fish but oh well.

Bummer is, I have spent 25-35 hours working one location as it is typically wind protected. The fish are there and many off them but now the wind will probably keep us from fishing that spot.

That's life or fishing. We will find them elsewhere with a little extra work.

Had the granddaughters overnight last night and said they needed to get to bed early so we could get up early for a early start to the day. The older one Taylor, I knew would be up and ready at 7 or so but the younger Courtney likes to sleep in until 8:30 or so.

I got up, made my coffee and went uptown to the bakery to get the girls thier favorite donuts. My phone rang and my wife said you should come home right away as the youngest was up at 6am and said where is grandpa as I am ready to go fishing.

Got home, loaded up the boat and the kids and off to the lake we went.

About 7:15 we were on the water and in our first spot to do some bobber fishing. Trouble is, the waves were really bangin and the white caps were rockin as the wind was approx 20mph. Figured we had to go to the calm side of the lake to fish as they would not even see thier bobbers in the waves.

Tried approx 5 different spots out of the wind and we only had 1 gill boated and I could see this was not going to work.

So, I checked a few other spots but could not find any fish. I went to the deepest part of the lake out in the middle and the fish were stacked.

I explained to the girls that we were going to drift using a lindy rig and a crawler for some fish as they had of course never done this.

I could not believe how well they caught on and after a bit we ended up with a very nice limit of 20 gills with the largest up to 9". Also boated a few nice crappie.

We had lunch in the boat and fished from 7:30 until about 1pm. I was very suprised they did not ask to go home when we could not catch a fish for almost 2 hours.

Courtney, the youngest said to me on the way home, Grandpa, could we have a fish combo and I asked what is that and her sister Taylor said a fish fry. I called my wife at work and she said of course and then my wife called thier mom and dad to let them know we were having a fish combo.

I have to say, this was one of the best days of fishing I have ever had.

Here are a few pics of Taylor and Courtney with thier fish.
