Thanks. I shot him at 615 at night, so I had to wait 12 hours and 15 min grin I caught him heading back towards his roost. I should have only had to wait 15 min. I heard them fly down, one came right in front of me behind some trees, had the gun up waiting for him to step out and he must have seen me move and headed the other way.

There was one other truck out in the morning and then again at night. I didn't see anyone else and I drove by all the lots and the roads. Plenty of people walking on the trails with no clue it was turkey season or that I was 15' away with a gun.

Who's up next in the group? Any scouting news?

I was out with my brother this weekend. We saw a nice Tom Fri night, and had gobbling all around us in the morning, but nothing came our way. We had a group of about 3 jakes and 5 hens cruising around all weekend. I will be looking for him in May.

Well the first day of turkey hunting was a bust, but we came close. We had a tom gobbling and coming closer and closer but he held up on the woodline and wouldn't come in. It is tough calling because most of the toms are already with hens. We will have to be more patient tomorrow - last chance for me this year because it is the last day of my season.

Well we got up bright and early only to find that someone was already in our spot - one of the side effects of hunting public land. We drove around to other places we had heard about or previously scouted, and got a few gobbles, but they were on corn fields on private land and didn't want to enter the woods. Oh well, gave it a good go anyway, there is always next year.

Yep I also was up bright and early and then.......nothing it was quiet. Had a few gobblers the last few days but could not get them to commit.

This was my first year turkey hunting and even though i did not get one. I sure had a blast!! and ready for more!!

Quick question: I went with another guy so this being my first year i did not buy any calls or nothing like that so my question is how often do you guys call.??? Like if its quiet nothing around do you call and try and get something like every 15-30 min call??

How about if you got one gobbling to you?? Call kinda often to try and get him so you don't lose him?

thanks guys

Calling is tough to lay out as every birds and situation is different.

As a general rule though if I have a bird responding to my calls with gobbling he knows where I am and I really back off on my calling. The more he gobbles the more likely a real hen will respond and steal him away.

When It's quiet I call softly every 10-20 miuntes. When in the woods I do a lot of leaf scratching as well.

Toms in the NE Metro seem to be moving heavily around 10 - 6. The Toms I have seen after 6 do NOT appear to be interested in hens, but are seen alone and along woodlot edges eating a little before flying up to roost.

Mid day calling in a "random" spot may pay off.

Late evening is probably best spent trying to cut him off on his path to a known roost. Well that is if they are using the same area every evening.

Mrklean. This is 57. It is a no go for me. My 1 Yearold grand daughter burnt her foot and was sent to the hennipen county burn unit sooooo. I only hunted 2 days. They are really not into the talking thing right now. I finally got a tom ( in the field behind me ) to get interested sunday morning. We had been setting up early in a 10 acre plowed corn field and I think he was seeing us set up in the morning because when we snuck in the same time the next day and stayed on the edge of the field below him. We went to the cigar shaped field next to it, it worked. He had seen us setting up above us at 4:30 am. It worked because after a few tree talk calls he gobbled once and you could hear him fly down. Into the field at about the same spot we were setting up prior. Thats my luck.. Me and Mr. Bad Luck are best friends!! Any way after he landed we had a jake and a hen land in our field. The jake went into half strut right away, cool to watch. Anyway, the tom was working his way to us but couldnt see him. Just hear him strutting and makeing the noises that they do. the hen started feeding and working her way to you guessed it the drive way that separates the 2 fields. Tough call being my last morning I could hunt. Well I knew that if she got in there with Tommy Gobbler I didnt have a chance so as they worked closer to within 25 yards the jake was still on her heals I had to send him a payload of 3.5 inch # 6 winchester extended range and BINGO!!, I was right on the money! 15 lb. jake on the ground. Sorry that I couldnt help you guys and bag a tom. It would have been sweet.. Maybe next year with the good Lords help!! (1957)
