Team 7 - ''JAKES OR BETTER''

Hi fellow Team 7ers, just thought I'd get a thread going (first team thread, obviously we are ahead of the ball game)

When and where is everybody hunting?

I am starting April 14 in Virginia. Might be at a slight disadvantage as I will be mainly trying to get 2 first-time turkey hunters their birds this year, and then trying to shoot my first gobbler with a bow.

Did my first scouting trip of the year today and roosted 2 gobblers, I am getting the fever!

Paintbrush checking in. I'll be hunting in SD. first, then NE. and then here in MN during the E season. I'll also be taking 4 other people out here in MN. on their hunts, so I'll get plenty of time in the woods! Saw 5 different strutters this morning. They are really starting to get me fired up!

Funny thing happened to me last night. On my way into town around 6:00 I saw a Tom coming out of the woods right in front of me on the highway. Nobody else was behind me so I stopped right by the tom and figured it would turn around into the woods, but it kept coming right for my truck. The darn thing gobbled, went into strut, and then attacked the truck! Then it proceeded to stut up and down the middle of the road. Cars had to slow down and go around that fool bird. He was fired up! Went back down there this morning and he was gobbling away on the roost.

Well it looks like everyone's checked in. Not much input on a name so I think we'll go with the only one that's been commented on... Jakes Or Better. Jakes are fine & dandy, but it's going to take some toms to win this thing!

I leave Wednesday morning for NE - hopefully I'll be able to lay down a nice hand for the team!

My first attempt at bagging a bird ended in frustration. I spent a few days in NE Nebraska and I had a fantastic few days of hunting with my bow.

On day two I shot a jake, got a pass through with the Rage 2blade and I'm sure he is mortally wounded. However, after flopping for a couple seconds, the turkey stood up and ran off through a plum thicket and out of my life. I found one feather on the other side of the thicket and we searched for two hours. No bird, no feathers, no blood. I'm sure he's a critter snack now.

On day three I had the whole flock in front of me, 4 toms and 4 hens. It was textbook. They flew off the roost and milled about strutting in front of my blind. I picked a nice tom, drew back and fired at 12yds. My arrow went just over the top. I clipped a couple feathers, but no damage. As I grabbed another arrow I was busted by the hens and the whole flock ran off.

My buddy Dan got his first with a bow. He took a jake. After seeing how my first bird ran off he charged out of the blind to catch his and ended up chasing his close to 200yds. He found it under a log hiding. Had he not chased after the bird it would've likely ended the way my first chance did. Fortunately he has a great story to go with his bird.

I had several close encounters and took two shots in 3 days. I've never had such luck turkey hunting anywhere. Hopefully my good fortune will follow me to Missouri and MN. I can't believe I have to wait 2 weeks to hunt again.

Sounds like you had a great hunt Andy, sorry about the outcome. That's so often what happens when you choose to carry archery tackle on a turkey hunt. They are a tough critter to bring down with an arrow. Better luck in MO. Congrats to your buddy Dan.

Sorry to hear the tough luck Andy & congrats to your buddy! I've been there many times - frustrating as heck! It's amazing how those toms can turn your nerves inside out at 15 yds!

We had a pretty tough trip this year too. Spent the first few days hunting/scouting and didn't really get on the birds good until our last day. That wind was brutal - pretty tough to call. Bounced around on a few different properties and saw the same thing all over. Lone hens wandering around everywhere and the toms were all in small groups with 4-6 hens. Called in some jakes, but opportunities were few & between with a few misses mixed in. I finally connected on our last afternoon with a nice 2 yr old which made the drive home a little easier. We're unofficially on the board! I'll get the paperword submitted tomorrow sometime. I'm up again here in MN on the 18th. Anyone hunting before then?
