PDF to excel

Tom7227

Question

Someone sent me a ton of data in PDF format and I would like to get it into excel. Beyond my pay grade. Anyone know if/how? The source will not send it any way other than PDF. All it is are the records of my energy use from NSP so it's no big deal.

Thanks for your time.

Tom

Download the app foxit. It is a pdf reader like adobe, but unlike adobe, it allows you to save the file as a plain text file. Once you have it saved as a text file you can open it in excel. It is going to ask you about delimiters etc, depending on the layout of the data you may need to go with either space delimited or fixed width fields.

This may be a better topic for the electronic and computer forum.

Give Zamzar a shot.

Just go to zamzar.com and use their free online conversion tool. You upload the PDF, tell them what file format you want it turned to, and then give them your email address. They'll convert the file and email it back to you. Takes just a few minutes and you don't need to download anything.

I've used in many times to convert all types of files.

The best way that I have found to do it is, if you have access to any version Adobe Acrobat Professional, you can open it with that application and save a excel sheet. This way will allow you to keep most if not all the formatting without having to allocate all the delimiters. I haven't really used the free stuff on the web, so I don't know the results of those.

PS I don't have Adobe Acrobat Professional, but the admin in my office does on her work PC and she converts them for me. Just thinking out of the box.

I don't have adobe pro. I have Adobe 8 standard and all I do is highlight the numbers I want converted, right click on the group and there is an option that comes up that says "open table in spreadsheet" or something like that. 70% of the time it works every time. grin Not great for converting large workbooks with multiple tabs but for single pages it will get the job done.

Thanks for the advice. I have tried them all and every time the info opens and it looks like Sanskrit. I think the base document has some coding in it so that a conversion is not possible. Guess I can try and cook the goose a different way.

I know that it's a giant PITA, but just manually enter it all into a spreadsheet the way that you want it.

I end up having to do this all the time and it's nice to have it the way you want it but it would be a huge time save having a PDF to Excel converter and then organizing the data the way you like... A 300 unit rent roll is no fun typing in excel

I am telling you guys Foxit will allow you to save a .pdf file to a text file. It is a free download on the web, just do a search for Foxit. We ran into this at work as our main system creates all reports and publishes them in a .pdf file. Was driving the accounting staff nutz when they needed to manipulate the data.

Any text file can be opened/imported into excel. Little putzy, but waaaaaaay faster than manual entry.

Just install Foxit.

Open Foxit and navigate to where you saved the .pdf file, open it.

Go to file, they save as, it will allow you to name and save it as a .txt file just remember where you saved it.

Open excel, go to file then open, navigate to where you saved the file.

Change the file type to all files or text.

Find your file, click to select and then open.

It is going to start a wizard for you to help you determine how Excel should treat the document. This part is probably the most putzy depending on the row column setup in the .pdf file, it may take a few stabs at it to get it right.

Done, save your file as an Excel file and there ya go.

The best pdf to excel solution for this would be a software called PDF2XL

I've tried a number of PDF to excel converters - they are the best without a doubt.

All the others just convert very basic structures - and their support team is just outstanding - very nice and very professional, even if you have a trial so I would definitely try downloading that and give it a go.

Just had to use Foxit this week when a teacher gave us an assignment in PDF and we needed to modify it. Very simple to turn it into text. Worked great!!!

It also has a really good search function that I use all the time.We search our PDF text books and it allows to to include folder at the same time.

This one did the trick. I ended up having to print and scan the original and then the conversion worked well. That may have also worked in the other versions folks recommended.

Thanks for your help on this.
