If that is what ice fishing really was, I wouldn't do it anymore. That just doesn't look fun at all.

But then again Kazakhstan is the greatest coun-try in the world. All the other countries are run by lit-le girls. Kazakhstan in Asias #1 exporter of potassium, all other countries have inferior potassium...

From what I understand the champion team is the one who catches the most NUMBER of fish. I remember Mick Thill when he first hit the fishing scene here with his european style "floats" and linked up with Lindy tackle in Brainerd. One promo video showed him catching one small sunfish one after another. He was so excited because it was one after another. Of course, any kid with a cane pole and any bobber could do the same promo off on almost any dock in Minnesota. The same feat is not so easy in other parts of the world.

Again the name of the game is catching the largest number of fish, which usually means fishing for the most abundant, which usually is some small species.

The country has big fish such as huge Beluga sturgeon and catfish 6 feet plus in length.

I wonder what type of auger they are using. It looks really tall and appears to be faster then my gas auger poping holes in the ice.

I wonder if it is as fast as it looks too. The auger seems really fast, especially for a hand auger. And the ice doesn't look like the typical "soft" late season ice, but good solid mid winter ice. It is a small diameter auger, which would help a lot.

the worlds are more about time and the more fish that are caught the higher the over all weight. even a 1/10th of a second can make the difference between winning or losing. as for bringing the world here. they were held over in Wisconsin back in 2010 I believe. and that year team usa did win it. if you would like detail about the world talk to Jack Baker. he did a seminar at Thorne Brothers about the NAIFC and the Worlds. check out Thorne Brothers videos for his seminar. personally this type of fishing is not for me. to me the pressure to win would take the fun out of it.

by the way that first auger they showed looked like the new composite strike master hand auger. I think team usa was using them. they are offered in a traditional handle or a european handle model.

Fishing for Bait!! Gives ice fishing a bad image wink

That first hand auger the guy was drilling with looks more like the new Strikemaster Synthetic hand auger (see red drill head), but they seem to be using a modified/non-standard handle. The one sitting in the background definitely looks like a Nils.

that was the off set european version of the strikemaster. they can be purchased with either style of handle. Nils hand auger handles are the offset european style.

I will be trying out for team USA at the qualifier in March. I have a Nils 4.5 and can beat quite a few power augers! (one hole of course wink ) Re: fish size, I don't care if I get tiny fish, as long as they are bigger than everyone else s tiny fish! grin

Though it isn't always who catches the most dinky fish. 2010 individual world champion,Mike Boedecker, and Team USA won by focusing on icing the bigger fish that were crappie suspended a few feet off the bottom, while everyone else worked the perch near the bottom. I just love competition ice fishing, though I understand it is not for everyone. I have just as much fun doing competitions, as I do fishing for "fun". If I do bad, I may be disappointed, but I still have a good time back at the base, having a beer and talking with other anglers, and learning how to improve next time. Me and Lawrence are starting a new ice fishing club focusing on world competition ice fishing. it is free, if anyone is interested let me know!

I think that from that link you can find many of augers at in video.

If i saw right there was couple of titanium-augers too, at eastern Europe and here these can see at competions sometimes, cos these are lighter than normal steel-augers and bits from UR-augers (Nils-master-brand at US-markets) fits for titanim-augers.
