I posted it on the mirror in the bathroom. She didn't seem to have the same sense of humor about it that I had. Especially since, at the time, her income was about double mine. I had a good laugh when I read your post.

When we got married my wifes uncle gave that to her as a wedding gift, she was not very happy, it is still a running joke between us, every time one of us messes something up we always say go read the good wife book, or "jeez honey I didn't see that in the good wife book". Needless to say the good wife book met its demise in a campfire one night after a couple adult beverages.

As far as having respect for the outdoors, its generational imho, you were either taught to respect nature or not. My dad always emphasized respect for others and nature itself, whether it was only shooting what you were going to eat, only keeping what you were going to clean, following fish and game laws, and (most importantly in his book) packing out what you brought in. The one thing you can do to ensure that there will still be some of us who respect the outdoors is teach your kids the same thing you were taught, at least it is passed on to someone then. There is also nothing wrong with teaching those around you to show a little respect, you don't have to go overboard but passing on a little knowledge is never a bad thing!

Crazy thread--full of ~30 year olds! I'll go on record saying I just turned 34 the other day. I get tired of disrespectful behavior out there as well.

It's the curse of being an introvert. We're more 'sensitive' to that stuff.

I turned 34 two months ago, and am an introvert as well. Weird. grin

Interesting thread and I think there are a few different aspects to this...

- One is what ice fishing is to people. Lot of folks think ice fishing is about sitting in a shanty drinking beer, getting drunk, not catching fish, and getting away. This isn't a new idea, been around for a LONG time. I've been an avid icefisherman for a long time, this is what most of my co-workers, acquaintances, friends around me think I do when I icefish. When I show them what I catch and how I do it, they are shocked. For one reason or another, lot of folks think this is what icefishing is and perpetuate and embrace this stereotype when they come into the sport.

- Age is completely irrelevant to this discussion IMO. You have your bad apples through the entire age range, they just violate differently. Lot of 50-60 year olds tagged every year for filling freezers.

I'm 33 years old now. Been a very active member of this HSOforum for over 10 years. Pro Staffed for this HSOforum over half those years helping folks, sharing tips and info, organizing get-togethers, etc.

Way back when, I remember a young kid that went by the screen name MJ5. Full of enthusiasm and an awesome fisherman. Posted like crazy and helped everyone. You'd know him now by the name Matt Johnson.

There are some very young people that bring freshness and enthusiasm to our outdoors sports. They are out there and are many more than you'd probably think.

- Bottom line to the OP is if all of your friends in this sport are bad apples, you have to start fishing in a new sea (find new friends). Over time, the forum here is a good place to meet them. Plenty of other places as well cause there are a lot of good folks around, you just have to look in the right places.

I have thanked my parents many times for enstilling the values on me that i cherrish today. I'm 27, fished 110 days last year, hunted deer for a month... I'm a smoker, and haven't dropped a cigarrette on the ground in over a year. I pick up others trash, generally fish by myself and enjoy doing so mostly because i like the peace and quiet and am a run n gun ice fisherman. In the soft water months i also like to fish by myself as i can sit in my boat for 30hrs without a bite and call it a good day. I do my part in sharing my values with my daughter, but unfortunately i only get to share those values with her 5 times a year as she is living 1000 miles from me the last two years; that will humble a father and make you cherish every moment you spend with your child. To the OP, your not the only one with your great values, there are lots of great people on this HSOforum, and in the outdoors in general. Sounds like your grandpa was a good man!

I was just thinking how this all relates to portable guys and permy guys. 99% of the creeps that move their portables so close you can't put out a tip up or park your car are usually very young. Hmmmmmmm

Hawg, I have seen this go the exact opposite before. I watched a guy with a portable all set up and a guy with a "big" wheel house pulled right up to the back of his shack where he couldn't even flip it backwards to open it without having it lay on the hood of the truck. That would tick me off. The two got into it a couple minutes and the guy with the portable packed his stuff up which I thought was dumb, and then the guy pulled his porty and atv about 30' away and got off his ATV and proceeded to start punching holes right up tight to his truck wheels...lol I never laughed so hard. The guy with his perm quickly cranked up and moved. chalk one up to the little guy. He was lucky he didn't get his clock cleaned at nearly half his size.

Permies being towed up and dropped so close a guy couldn't even hitch up his house and move is one thing, but I don't see any problem with portables being dropped next to a shack for a couple hours.

I don't think that a person has a right to the lake for 50yds around him because he can drop a house on a hot spot for the entire season. Like peoples opinion on the quality of morals today, your millage may vary.

Regulations say you have to be minimum 10' away from another shelter. It's a shame there has to be a regulation like this because it should be just common courtesy to give another guy at least a little breathing room. My own personal rule is no closer than about 25'.

Last year on a lake by cold spring I had a guy probably in his 40's set up his portable so close to my Ford Ranger that I had to enter through the passenger side to leave. Before I left I asked him if he had seen a black ford ranger around because I couldn't find my truck. No answer and I'm guessing nobody home anyway. I'm just glad I had a bench seat in the ranger. You have to laugh at some of this stuff. You can't make it up.

My 2c you will find good and bad people in every generation. The difference between the good and bad usually comes from difference in the upbringing of the person. Sure their are exceptions to the rule. Most of us who post in here had someone, in my case my father, teach us how to be good men/women and we learned a lot from them. We are also the types that will pass those same learnings onto our own children. Although my dad passed away 5 years ago I still try to follow in his footsteps and often ask myself "what would dad do". When it comes to fishing I usually do it alone now because my old fishing partner isn't around and my daughter is too young to tag along. Plus I like the quiet and peacefullness of having "me time". It doesn't bother me that other go out on the lake just to drink...a lot of us did that when kids including me. I don't do it now unless we take the wheel house but even then I manage to fish pretty hard. I am good at multi tasking. lol

    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
