Walleyes and crappies out of the same hole?

I sometimes hear about people catching walleyes while fishing for crappies, but it NEVER happens to me (well, it has a couple of times on Red Lake, but that's a different fishery entirely), even on lakes where I expect it to be possible. Are there spots, structure, or depths an angler can look for or certain types of lakes where a person has a better chance of catching both species out of the same hole?

I would like to occasionally pull a walleye through the ice, but I just don't have the patience for them and I almost never have much luck when I target them. I thought if I could have a chance at crappies too, it might make me a little more willing to sit out there.

If you are sitting over a large basin away from structure, it's not very likely that you will catch walleyes. Try moving closer to points and the base of a drop off. You can still find crappies here and walleyes will use the same spots.

I've been fishing a spot like this all year and have been catching both. If I move towards the basin, I find more crappies. One thing to note, the crappies I've been catching in these spots are larger than the ones I've been catching directly over the basin.

I fish a finger that juts out into deeper water (25'). The south side of the finger is comprised mostly of sand/gravel with the basin comprised of mud. The north side of this finger is comprised of gravel/rocks with basin mostly sand. At the tip of this finger is where I fish, which is where all these bottom contents merge together. My theory is that the walleyes are cruising the north side and the crappies the south side. It seems to hold true since if I move north or south, I tend to catch more of the other. This spot is just beginning to produce like I remember, which I attribute to the fact that the shallow weeds have finally begun to lay down and die.

Sorry Krabby, it's been nice fishing without crowds lately grin

Look at maps, a lot of the time there are prime spots on lakes that just get overlooked. Much of the time, it seems like guys will favor spot near the crowd over spots that look good, but don't have people already fishing there. Doesn't make much sense to me.

Points into deep water, sharp drops into deep water, edges of weed flats into deep water, they will all give you a shot at both species.

I found a new lake this year where I've caught 26" and under catfish, 25" and under walleye, 12" and under crappies all out of the same hole.

A lot of dink craps and gills mixed in with the nicer fish. Not much structure on this lake.

Some of my best crappie spots are not walleye producers. I do seem to get a few crappies while fishing walleyes along shallow weedlines and shoreline breaks. These crappies are few and far between especially as winter moves along, but the ones that stick in these shallower areas seem to be higher quality fish.

Yes, I have caught eyes, crappies, sunnies, and northerns out of the same hole. However, I typically set up the permanent on a lake near Brainerd in 12 feet of water to fish northerns all day. Get out prior to sunrise and fish crappies and sometimes get a "few". Then typically some sunnies as the sun comes up. Northerns all day long and then in late afternoon, now and then, not every day, walleyes visit. The, crappies when completely dark. not lots of eyes, but the ones coming in are usually larger in the 3-5 lb category. Getting 2 is about it. I fish on weeds and near the edge of deeper water, although in this case deeper means only 14-16 feet as opposed to the 12 I fish.

I've ran into this a few times on a lake ive been fishing this year. I'm fishing a spot with a hump just out from shore and its like a 20 foot valley running between shore and the hump with fairly steep drops on either side of me. The walleyes are on the bottom and the schools of crappies move through suspended.

I've actually had some of my best Crappie days when I was targeting Walleye's (kind of the reverse of what your trying to do). Sometimes all I caught was Crappies instead of the eye's I was looking for. Then again I also have caught loads of sheepshead trying for walleye's too....

about 10 years ago I stayed the night on a small local lake with the plans of taking the portable out in the morning to try a different spot. While setting up the portable I had a tip up out and the flag was up. Pulled up a 2.25 lb crappie (weighed later at the local bait shop). Put the line back down and continued setting up the porty, I was having issues with the heater, and there the flag goes up again, pulled up about a 4 lb walleye. Within 5 minutes from each other, and didnt catch another fish the rest of the morning.

This was on a point dropping off into a deeper hole on the north side of the lake. The top of the point had boulders and gravel, which I'm guessing attracts the walleyes, and then it drops off into about a 30 foot hole (crappies). I was set up in about 18 feet or so right on the break.

    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
