I think your options are....

propane lantern

white gas lantern (what I use)

electric lantern

LEDs

I like the white gas (coleman fuel) because it is relatively cheap, I already have one, and it puts off a little bit of heat (when its warmer out, I'll skip using a heater all together and just go with the lantern.)

I like the LED strips mounted in the traps, however the best ice fishing lights I have used from a multi-functionality standpoint are Rayovac sportsman extreme lanterns. 300 lumens with hangers on the top and bottom. You can take the lens off and the bulb has a really nice diffuser that creates a really even light distribution. And, there only about $18 each.

I just got off the lake testing my new Rayovac SE3DLN Sportsman Xtreme 300-Lumen LED Lantern

It's 18 bucks it's really small and performs awsome! You can remove the globe and hand it upside-down in the shack. Much more managlbe than the lantern.

The FireBrite LEDs are not the same sets you get elsewhere. The FireBrites you get from OutdoorProStore, have good thick wires, and alligator clamps on them. The LED lighting is more durable and brighter.

The cheap ones found elsewhere, have lots of problems, I have bought them in the past, and I have gotten them with half the string not working, and tried to contact them, it was useless! I will never buy from them again. To me good customer service is priceless, bad customer service is worthless.

The new FireBrite LEDs sold this year have been upgraded since last years model which even then was an improvement over the others out there.

They are even more solidly put together and I would say a bit brighter as well.

I started using these LEDs last year and very impresed with how freakishly bright they are. Like the versitility of hanging them in the shack, and double as a lantern I can take with me out hole hopping for for lighting area during take down.

Great option for my pop-up shacks. Just add a velcro Frabill hook, and your good to go. Get two if you have a double wideb pop-up.

The guys with the firebrite lights, do you prefer the AA battery ones or the 12V battery? and where do you store your 12 volt in your house if you use that?
I built a battery box for my LEDs which is attached inside the sled. Wired up a switch & replaced the alligator clips with the female spades that fit the gel battery's. Still have headlamps and a lantern but haven't needed them yet this year.

The Jason Mitchell Elite Series one man has a battery box with a hold in strap that holds a flasher size battery. Works perfect for the 39" FireBrite LED lights.

Different strokes for different folks, I get that...But honestly, unless you have a reason like Crappienut, why wouldn't you run LEDs? I used to run a lantern, I think we all did. But I got sick of cracked globes and mantles, expensive propane bottles, hot surfaces that melted line, fish house sides, and clothing. Plus you had a frosty interior from waste water vapors. The LEDs are brighter and in my case they are zip tied for permanent use. I just clip to the battery and I have light. They draw such little amperage, and those 12 volt batteries are $20 bucks.

If you're reading this and you still run a gas lantern, do yourself a favor in 2012 and at least TRY LEDs.
